With the recent flurry of outrage directed at one camp or another, I got to thinking. Everyone seems to have an opinion, so let's hear some of them... What is selling out? If we're going to have accusations, let's have some definitions, as well. I'm inclined to think many people on this list would say even Michelangeo was a sell-out...just consider his work on the sistine chapel, not to mention any of the OTHER work he did for the pope or for one rich family or another. Of course, he didn't get paid much of the time, but that doesn't change the fact that he PAINTED FOR MONEY. Is there anyone willing to say that Michelangelo was a sell-out AND that this was bad (for him or for his fans or for society; whichever selling out is bad for) AND that he shouldn't be considered one of the greatest artists of all time? So when does an artist sell out? And, most important of all, why is it bad? ---brian

For clarification on this subject, as always, it is best to consult Vanilla Ice. Paraphrased from an interview: "Yeah, I'm a sell out. I'm selling out [stadiums, on tour] every night." My question is, who would accuse him of selling out? Selling out what? -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

when any true artist doesn't stay "true to him/herself" ...it has nothing to do with money...it's all about sticking with one's artistic guns... db ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Correct - everyone has their own opinion, or should be , are looking at it from their own perspective, but i would agree with Ian McKaye, who defined "selling out" as "doing something you are fundamentally oppossed to for commercial gain" also anyone heard that Le Tigre album - any good? _>>>____Docktor Barnes Advocaat ICQ #60493625 ____________________________ http://www.onoksid.freeserve.co.uk "Payola was the greatest thing in the world. Yea, I'd agree with that definition of selling out (I'd agree with most things that come out of Ian Mackaye's mouth. :P) Anyway, the Le Tigre album is decent, but my roommate's ex-girlfriend listened to this one song so much I wanted to stab my own eyes out. but that's not the album's fault. :) -- :: atomly :: atomly@atomly.com | atomly@atdot.org | atomly@cyrus.net http://www.atomly.com | http://www.mp3.com/atomly [CELL|(888)522.3830] | [CELL|(701)729.1631] | [HOME|(651)748.8676] --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Haha... Rebelling against good taste, perhaps, or maybe rebelling against the underground.
