I don't know squat about the inner workings of turntables. I hope someone out there can diagnose what's wrong with my Technics SL-1200 MK2 (direct drive). At irregular times, records sound like they're warped or going in and out of pitch while spinning. The unit's about 2 years old. Any ideas about what's wrong here and what action should be taken? Thanks. Check if the pitch fader is totally centered (LED is on). If it's not the LED may blink a bit and the speed changes irregularly. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i've had similar problems with my direct-drive JVC table (JL-A40). a table geek at the local vintage electronics shop recommended i flip the table over, pull off the bottom panel, and re-lube the drive gears (to which you should have easy access after removing the panel). it actually worked--it stays on pitch MOST of the time now and hardly fluctuates at all. make sure you use some type of plastic-safe GREASE, though. NO WD-40! i used Vaseline, believe it or not. ;) HOWEVER, if that doesn't fix it, there's possibly a more serious problem with the drive assembly. i'd take it to a repair shop if that's the case. ks At 18:49 2/3/00 +0200, jussi.saarelainen@nokia.com wrote:

Thanks for all the responses to my question. Here's another one: Why is the pitch variance inconsistent? Some records play okay; sometimes the trouble surfaces only sporadically over the course of the needle's journey from groove one to the last. There's no consistent pattern to the problem, which baffles me. None of the records is warped; I checked that. Anybody have an explanation? Thanks again. 1200's don't have gears, the drive mechanism is magnetic. I've see plenty old ones wobble randomly. A trip to a tech will sort it out. brock. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Although it is of course true that the drive mechanism is magnetic, there is a little plastic part in 1200's which does have gears in it, and which does have something profound to do with the operation of the drive shaft. I have no idea what it does, but when it doesn't do it right, things go awry. My table just ground to a halt and it was this very part which was the culprit. If you like I can send you schematics off list (they are very pretty). The files are too big for IDM. Hope my vague knowledge is of some use. Cheers, Christophe Brock Suter wrote:
