Well, I'll post a more detailed review later on, but basically: - hard to believe that after recording for 15 years this is his first full-length solo record, isn't it? - It's a very classy piece of work. It's got a very polished feel to it, which puts off some people but hey, Atkins isn't a 20-year old kid pumping out four-track tapes in his basement so I don't think he should have to try to sound like one to be "street", do you? - _Deep Space_ continues the move towards jazzy timbres and structures of the last few Model 500 EPs (Jazz is the Teacher, Sonic Sunset). - It's very good. -- dave walker, detroit art services _ marmoset@conch.aa.msen.com born freeke <A HREF="http://www.msen.com/~marmoset/">Dave Walker</A>

Well, I like it A LOT! "Smooth" is the operative term here, very very smooth. It has been compared (not surprisingly) to the production style of Sonic Sunset, the two even share the "I wanna be there" vocal track, and there is one other vocal track "THe Flow" with a woman sort of smoothly talking through it, unique and chill. Highlights are the tracks co-written with Kevin Saunderson and and co-written with Maurizio. No real peak-hour-screamers here,but that's never been Juan's style, anyway. I think it's an excellent piece. I have the vinyl, I'm wondering if there are different tracks on the CD, or when/where the 12" singles from this are. A friend in LA was around for the shooting of a video for "The Flow" -- anyone seen it? Never thought I'd see Juan do a video, but hell, why not? He's finally getting the respect he deserved 10 years ago... peace, Matt MacQueen <macqueen@student.msu.edu>

I believe _The Flow_ is released sometime this month on R&S with remixes from Alex Reese, Underworld, Frank De Wulf, Howie B, and The Jedi Knights. Looks good to me... :) - Matthew "I grew up thinking that techno music is actually something that you can't imagine. That is techno at its best. I have the LP. It is a much more subtle, repetition-based batch of work than the Transmat stuff rereleased lately, Side 3 track one is incredible--kicks FSOL's butt at funky-morphy-filter lines IMO... I liked it--some immediately likeable stuff and then some more minimal and futuristic stuff that seeps in slower. One thing made me laugh: I had just recorded this track in which I had tweaked my cz101 (low end casio) to do this certain realtime slur, and <bing> there is was in one of his new songs! Used differently enough that I didn't have that, "oh man, I feel like such an obscure loser" kneejerk reaction, though... thumbs up David Chandler - chandler@nethost.multnomah.lib.or.us (503)301-3011 grep -i casio goodwillbins >> mystudio ; grep -i atari goodwillbins >> mystudio ;

I just got my copy of Deep Space by Juan Atkins, and it's very good. Detroit techno at best. I was really a little put off by Carl Craig's and Kenny Larkin's last releases, but Atkins keeps the Detroit sound alive and well. There are two tracks that so much resemble the Basic Channel sound that made me wonder if he had any hands in any of the BC releases. Two tracks also feature vocals, one of a soul like female voice and another a male one. The one with the male voices I've heard before and I think is just a re-release. The other vocal track is very good. Some great lush synth sounds, with sweeping filters all over, can be found on some of the tracks and they just sound so good. A very fine release on R&S, get it. Aaah yes, the detroit classics. I always find myself going back to them. Anyway, the other essential Model 500 album you need is called 'Sonic Sunset.' It was released on R&S back in the mid-90s and features a deep lush detroit sound that is similar to but more mature than the tracks on 'Classics.' i believe 'Sonic Sunset' was repressed a year or two ago so it shouldnt be too hard to find. Model 500's 'Sonic Sunset' is a MUST HAVE. -->-Lance---- PO Box 450715 Westlake, OH 44145 United States --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
