Somehow I got on the mailing list from Adam Curry (the ex-MTV Internet bandwagon-jumper) and it has this odd note:

I wonder about this. Will it be on MBone? When Plaid and Autechre perform as 'New Wave Rockers' do they dress up like the Cars? I presume other groups will perform -- two days is a long time to spend spanking a drum machine! -- "This unit might get hot while operating, but there is nothing to worry about it." -- Chapter 1, Verse 10, the book of MKS30. -- kent.williams@cadsi.com [Kent Williams/CADSI/2651 Crosspark Rd/Coralville IA 52241/(319)626-6700]

32 Kbps is the lower limit for any digital audio broadcast of music if you want to be able to differentiate between Public Enemy and Orbital. I am barely joking, actually. Under 32 Kbps, with the current technology the quality degrades extremely rapidly and ends up sounding worse than the cheapest shortwave radio you can find. So, that would seriously limit the number of listeners... So they did as if they hadn't heard the result, and went for realtime audio on 10KBps. MBone is one solution, realaudio is another. Both are not suited for music at this kind of bitrate.

I heard that it would be RealAudio, not Mbone (no video). Since this craze for audio on demand, i get email on a regular basis on why we dont use this on hyperreal... Musicians are already cringing at MPEG which is several magnitudes better than RA, so forget it. I did a comparison of the various sound compressions on hyperreal, in the music/misc/sounds/compare directory, to ease my mailbox :) Ciao, -- Francois Dion (IdMEDIA) [> Email: francois@hyperreal.com <] ' [> C.P. 278, St-Lambert, QC, Canada, J4P 2N8 <] [> Raving Up North Ezine: run-request@hyperreal.com, subject: help <]

Yes, the session announcements are already in sd.

Nah; The Knack :-)

As I've stated before, this is completely pointless. Right now the MBONE audio transmits 8-bit mu-law telephone-grade quality audio, and because of the MBONE's carrying capacity you're lucky if you can get a few frames a second of video at best. The annoying thing is that the MBONE is essentially a research effort right now, suitable for testing transmissions and algorithms and the like. Just because one has the ability to send some video and audio over the 'Net doesn't mean that it can be received at 15-24 fps and 16-bit 44.1/48 KHz. While I have a certain begrudging respect for Curry's having transitioned from MTV hairspray metalhead to knowing about the MBONE, the fact is, the MBONE is Not Ready For Prime Time and won't be until/unless the Net's backbone carrying capacity (as well as leaf net) goes up to at least FDDI/Fast Ethernet levels (100 Mbit/sec) end-to-end. I'm sure most of us on IDM know that the generation of 15-24 fps video and 16-bit audio is *lots* of bits to be passing around in real-time. The forthcoming RTPv2 protocol will help this out in some ways, and IPv6 has further support for prioritizing Real-Time packet traffic. In the meantime, however, efforts like this and having the Groaning Bones on the MBONE is more for self-aggrandizement and promotion ("Gee, we can claim that the Stones are the first Big-Time Band to broadcast on the Internet!") than actual useful content. Having a 1.5x1.5" video window on my screen that updates maybe once a second, with a 60's AM radio to hear the "sound" is *not* my idea of how to watch Plaid and Autechre. As long as the backbone technology remains in its present state, FSOL (with their directed unicasts over ISDN and Switched 56 links) have a much better idea. Someday ... someday soon. But not now. - Greg

uh uh.... he doesn't know about MBONE.. he just has ppl working for him and he says: can I transmit video over the internet realtime ? And the ppl say: eeh yes... being the enthusiastic lot that they are and they know about MBONE so... then Curry says: Good, see to it that I get it will ya ? Allert "What's MBONE?" Actually, all the technical folks at OnRamp left to start their own company, where they didn't have to worry about Adam making promises they couldn't deliver. We now return you to "IDManiacs", already in progress. Thank you, drive through. Brian
