Ok. I haven't done reviews in awhile, but for you, sven.... ;) Aux 88 -- db009 and db010 Two new electroish tracks from direct beat (who insist on categorizing these two records as "techno bass" instead, which is a distinction I don't quite understand, but I'm sure it's due to my ignorance). Slammin beats (hard hitting, as opposed to, say, juan atkins' groovy beats) with vocal samples and squishy squiggles on top. Not exactly idm, but since y'all were talking about electro and since Dave mentioned this in particular... Should be released in a month or so. Drexciya -- Uncharted EP (UR S.I.D. 5) The S.I.D. records (there are five of them) are the in-store-only UR tracks that can only be purchased by going to Somewhere In Detroit and buying them in person. Marketing gimmick, I know, but hey. I like this Drexciya record better than UR030 (which I find too structurally undisciplined) or the one on Warp (which I find to be too boring). Hard groovy beats and crazy wicked distorted synth lines.. Yum. Underground Resistance and Andre Hollands -- City of Fear (UR 032) Another white label.. again, should be out in ~ 1 month, I think. The A side is a dark and brooding echofest, with drums banging and reverberating manaically... Less polished production than typical of Mad Mike, but I kind of like that. The B sides.. to be honest, I don't remember.. I'll listen to them again when I get home. If I remember correctly, one is a slowish mellow UR thing and the other is an even slower mellow UR thing (shows you where my tastes lie, eh?). There you have it. Other stuff I bought includes the new Technotika (GG009), Alan Oldham's new one on Generator (Liquid Metal Monster).. Send mail if you want the quick poop on these. Oh, and if you're reading this, Frankie, thanks. -Sho -- sho@physics.purdue.edu <<-- finger this account to find out what I'm having for lunch! Sho Kuwamoto.

Correct me if I'm wrong (Frankie?), but as I understand it what 430 West is saying is that these artists (and their influences) have been doing this stuff for years, before people were calling it "electro" (and hyping it in NME), and referring to it as bass music. Calling it "techno bass" distinguishes it from, say, Miami bass, which has a lot of the same antecedents but a, um, decidedly different focus (boo-tay!). -d.w. on now: 60Hz monitor hum (yech)

Dave basically calls it right. The new buzz word is 'electro', but the old-school has always known it as techno bass. Miami bass likes to steal samples from Detroit techno bass records... -- fix.er \'fik-s*r\ n : one that fixes : as : one that intervenes to enable a person to circumvent the law or obtain a political favor : one that adjusts matters or disputes by negotiation Robert Smith: fixer@d2.com 310/314-2920 310/314-2866(fax) 310/501-3279(pager) Digital Domain: 300 Rose Ave, Venice, CA 90291 310/314-2800 310/314-2888(fax)
