Anyone got the Soma compilation ? It's got a Ritchie Hawtin mix of Slam's Positive Education and other interesting looking stuff on it. I just wondered what it was like, whether it was worth buying. I got the Concept in Dance - Digital Alchemy comp. yesterday and some of that is quite quite fierce. It tends to plough a similar furrow all the way through (lots of filter sweeps disappearing off into the echoey distance and insistent kick drums powering away). So, on the face of it, it's not that subtle, but listen again and there is some other stuff going on. I reckon it's a pretty top-dollar compilation, the only draw back being that it makes you want to turn it up and up to neighbour unfriendly levels . Definitely for putting on before you go out to get you in the mood. And for when you get back to keep you there. I liked it. Tom

Sorry to ask one of these stupid "what does a 303 sound-like?" type questions, but what sound is a filter sweep? I am sure I have heard many as I have a massive collection of techno and IDM, but as I have no music-making know-how or equipment, you are talking "greek to me" Can someone give me a few well know examples pls. The Richie Hawtin remix is, just as the title suggests, "STRIPPED". It's very minimal and hard-housey in a Detroit kind of way. I like it quite a bit and think it works really well in a mix with the original version but I'd imagine other people might not like it or find it boring. Don't expect to find the highly collectible original mix of Positive Education on there! I like the SOMA label quite a bit so I'm biased but the comp doesn't have the best tracks from this label on here such as the harder non-vocal version of U-Dig, or Stoned or any of the remixes of Sidetraxx (especially not the acid-house version! :) Luckily, I already have all those. Instead it has some of the label's earlier stuff like One Dove and Slam's previous track. The vinyl version has an extra 12" BTW. They've got a song on the Dorobo sampler, Versteinerung. It's distributed by Darkwave. It's also got cuts from Zen Paradox and Paul Schutz. The Soma track's called Nightsoil. It starts with typical tribal rhythms and middle-eastern sounds and then the Orbital-type keyboard sounds and twangy synth guitars click in. Very unusual, but totally cool. Haven't checked my mail in a few days - so someone else may have already tried to correct for this - but I'm actually pretty sure that SOMA - if its the one I'm thinking of - is a collaboration of two artists that are generally found in the New Age section of record stores. Forgotten thier exact names - maybe Robert Rich or something along those lines. I think that there is one other release from them. I'll add just a little bit on what I know about SOMA. SOMA is a collaboration between David Thrussell and Pieter Bourke, who I *think* both also do work for Snog and Eden, respectively. The press sheet I have on them does not mention Steve Roach as a member, but I wouldn't doubt it at all, based on some of his other work. The first SOMA release is a self-titled, 7 track deal that came out about a year ago on the Mumbo Jumbo label (cat. no. MJM MCD 0001). The flyer I have on the disc described it as "... and absurd amalgamism of seemingly incompatible yet consumer friendly techno/reggae/ digital/ Spaghetti-Western/ wimpy ambient / analog/ new age/ organic/ flakey influences." Whew! While I haven't heard their latest release, I will recommend the self-titled debut as definitely right up the IDM vein of things, with what seems to me a very ethnic/tribal sort of nature, and heavy use of percussion. I think Soma Records is one of the best house labels and there is fair share of good techno releases as well. If you were a fan of Daft Punk, they were putting stuff out on Soma probably almost 2 years before they received commercial success. SURGEON - Muggerscumout ....that's the bomb!! But then again Surgeon rarely disappoints. Actually I highly recommend tracking down Funk D'Void's first lp on Soma. You can hear a strong appreciation of Detroit techno on the album. Oh, I almost forgot MAAS. Very good LP!! Definitely look out for this one. Yeah, just jump into the Soma section at your local shop. I have bought quite a bit, and I'm not the biggest house head either. www.somarecords.com
