I think it would be even cooler if you totally messed up their voices and made them say really weird things. Maybe make their voices all distorted and fade in and out like a resonant filter sweep. Since most of the rappers seem to be into getting really stoned these days and wearing pot leaves on their hats, you could really freak some of them and their fans out. IDM's still completely foreign to most people. I'll bet Onyx would like this type of stuff. I like their stuff and little other rap. Kathy, mistress of Naughty by Nature

Jochem must have tought of this also as on Ginger (dont remember the song) there is a drum pattern from a rap so, combined with the very IDMish sounds of Speedy J. Another thing that springs to mind would be Prodigy's music for a jilted generation. Probably fueled by PWEI style in that case... These are of course not obvious remix of a particular song, but more of a fusion of rap and techno. Check out Mike Oldfield's remix of ICE-T's "Gotta lotta love" on the Virgin record sampler "Singed Sealed Delivered" vol. 2. The music is great, though I find the rap annoying. Too bad there isn't a dub or instrumental of this. This sampler also has tracks by Massive Attack, FSOL, Fluke, Amorphous Androgynous and is a great deal for $5.99. -- niemitz@cats.ucsc.edu

1. the 18 year-old-something is stupid. FSOL is techno. Some people may refer to it as trance, acid, or something like that but it isn't rap. 2. Last time I checked Plastikman was techno also. Dave cdh1@ra.msstate.edu ***signature file under construction***

Not too surprising, actually - there's an American rap group called the Future Sound ("The Bop Step" was the closest they got to a hit), so the clerk probably saw that group listed as a rap group and asked to find out if it might be a truncated listing. This proves that (C)RAP is definitely the music of the future, and techno (like Public Enemy and Ice Cube) is all in the past. ^^^^^^^ umm, didn't they collaborate once before as NWA? :) hip hop is/was cool, but it seems rather lifeless these days. i think rap is quickly becoming a zombified form of music. it's very formulaic and redundant. i liked rap and hip hop a lot 8 years ago, but my musical tastes have always been leaning towards electronic dance music. so, while i'll stray occasionally and totally groove on eric b and rakim, or nirvana, ultimately i come back to binging on techno. IMO, there is no rap worthy of supporting these days, so by default i'm doing my part to euthenate it. i'm getting admonished by a roommate as i write this. he says "what about the beastie boys?" well, i hardly call the beastie boys hip hop much less rap anymore. i think they would say the same thing too. ......p......

Well, for those of us that go off in the odder veins of IDM - especially "jap jazz", the Mo' Wax stuff, and ohmygod the new Sabres of Paradise album, it's not that big of a stretch to imagine Q-Tip rhyming for Portishead, for example. A few rap "artists" have put out 12" singles with just *instrumental* versions of their songs; Boogie Down Productions has a few with a bass that just kicks. That's the other side of the coin - but sample at will. :-) All I can say is go for it, Richie. If it's got a good beat, you can dance to it, and it doesn't end up on some stupid K-Tel comp, it's probably worth a try. Dave p.s. The new Sabres is incredible. Dub-Happy Kraftwerk with Duane Eddy on guitar, produced by Sly and Robbie. Not really, of course. Anyone see any remixes from this record? Some of the tracks could be real stormers... you've just described a track off the agenda 22 comp (new electronica) "Lost" by MAX 404, rolling hard experimental loops and classy eevo tops. of course in place of the hard core goofy gangster talk, we hear the lamenting of a lovr... and yes, we KNOW you're nuts, that's why we like you ... Teep

That's kind of what some of the Mo'Wax stuff sounds like. For that matter, listen again to "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back." for some deep science behind rap music. You should ring up Terminator X, Mr. Hawtin, and do something with him. He did a DJ tour a few years ago that was nothing short of brilliant. -- Kent Williams kent@cadsi.com "Swirling a sound [in Quadrophonic Space] at an audio rate produces interesting spatial and modulative effects" -- Serge Modular Product Spec Sheet.

You may be nuts Richie, but not in the way that you mean -ie. this would be a bad idea. It must be tried! That's what we all like about this scene - people always tryin' new things, breakin' boundaries, messin' up headz. Oops, heard that before...

Get a tough rap over Richies "Motor Bass get Phuncked up" remix and you'd be off to a flying start, methinks

OK, Adrian Sherwood... But ya see, I think that's why I really liked Meat Beat, especially their early Sweatbox releases...although Jack Danger's lyrics and style doesn't exactly stand on par w/ hip-hop lyrics today...but the beats, samples (from hip=hop), as well as the tempo, went well w/ fucked-up filters, bleeps and feedback samples. (Morgan receives a standing ovation from all the meat beat fans out there. Jack is a hip-hop/psyche-out/trance/hell music/beat heavy/dub genius. well, i don't know if i agree with all of that, but i do agree on one point. meat beat manifesto make every hip hop dj look utterly and completely pathetic. the beats that mbm usher forth are fierce. most of the production work from hip hop dj's utilizes simple loops carved from different selections of their record collections. variation in hip hop tracks is minimal and predictable. i love hip hop beats, and i wish i could find some good instrumental hip hop work, but it seems that all people want to do is offer their pathetic views of the world... i also grew tired of the rappers. i am not a big fan of vocals i suppose, even though i love dancehall and jungle and ragga (to an extent). perhaps i am more amused with it because they sound like cookie monster? :) hip hop seems to have forgotten that music is an art that is supposed to push the boundaries of the envelope, and with major label's carving the music in the direction they want it to go in nothing good has been released that has made me take notice. someone does these fools up with some meat beat manifesto.

Meat Beat Manifesto's Armed Audio Warfare and Storm the Studio should be rereleased on january 17th on Mute/Elektra with new cover art but STILL no Strap Down pt. 3 on Storm.... They have been working on a new album which should be done in february and released around march.... The only remixes, etc. they've done lately that I'm aware of are Jack's wonderful work with EBN on teex3 and his remix of NIN's "closer" on the Closer single...... Actually, I think the new EBN album will be out before the new MBM, and Jack helped out a lot with that too....Considering Consolidated's new direction, I doubt they'll have much influence....and even if they do, people may have noticed Consolidated's views have grown up a little on their latest album.....anyway, back to IDM.......Luvvy Duvvy J On Sat, 14 Jan 1995, David K. I know we're getting off-topic here but I have to call you out on this attitude -- it's complete bullshit. Have you heard Bomb the Bass's latest stuff, especially "Bug Powder Dust"? Rap meets smooth breaks (Sorry I just can't stand the *new* phrase "triphop"). As with a lot of music these days, there's a fine line between what type of music your listening too when you hear "Bug Powder Dust". However, it is certain that its Rap meets something. Better than most rap stuff I have heard. MC
