quoted 3 lines DAT is fine but there is no substitute for watching some one play> >DAT is fine but there is no substitute for watching some one play > > WHY would you want to watch someone "play"?
You are right. It is not so much watching them *play* as it is being present at the moment of creation. One image I just can't shake is the sight on Mike Paradinas *ferretting* around a harem of electronics. His hands rifle every key, knob, dial, and button around him. With each touch we hear the music progress in an awkward but familiar direction. Then, he kicks it live into hyper space. That moment, when both hands go down on the keys is magic. You can see the release of emotion as he kicks his head back. Finally he is at peace with the struggle of the performace.Nothing to do but make sweet music. There is something there.

You need to get out to see a jazz quartet play. Try to tell Brother Jack or Wes Montgomery that they're *mechanical* and they'll tell you to take a fuckin hike. It's musical ballet. Certainly if they didn't come to dance (read: dat) you're gonna feel ripped off. Out in dance land the kids that can truly play ARE few and far between. Lucky for us (IDM) skills are the norm. . . not the exception.
quoted 2 lines at worst, it's mechanical movements plus theatrical> at worst, it's mechanical movements plus theatrical > wanking.
At worst it's something like watching moby. Yes, it does get quite sad.
quoted 1 line Does it convey ANY useful information?> Does it convey ANY useful information?
Information? I want energy. And a little emotion. And some fun too. :)
quoted 3 lines The following is a crosspost from alt.rave which sums up my feelings> The following is a crosspost from alt.rave which sums up my feelings > on live performance & music much more eloquently than I could have put > it...
mr. i read the crosspost and there isn't a damn inch of bandwidth on playing live vs playing dat. you should read it. then use your own head a bit to think about what you are going to say for yourself. Teep ------- End of Forwarded Message
