Well, in a similar style, I've always liked Terry Riley. His "biggest hit" is probably "in C," a wonderful performance of which (from 1968) is available on CD from CBS. The piece is a simple 53-figure progression; each musician decides when to move to the next figure, as well as when to pause for a measure and other such things. A piano pulse in C provides the "beat." Riley's "Rainbow in Curved Air" is a later piece that many in the 60's found more accessible. However, I find "in C" more interesting, and I think it's also easier to find.
