Well I guess since everyone is airing their dirty laundry, here's a brief rundown on shit I've been listening to. Age Desc. 7-11 LPs of Beach Boys and Beatles. Listened to a LOT of pop on AM radio (93 KHJ). Knew all the disco songs by heart. Had "Rapper's Delight" memorized when I was 10. Listened to Dr. Demento on KMET and in turn listened to a lot of what we now call classic rock. The first records bought with my own money were "Hotel California" (on the day it was released), and "ChangesOneBowie". 11-13 KROQ came on the air. Liked all the pop stuff but was mostly into punk, esp. LA style. Rodney on the Roq was my personal savior. Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Adolescents, etc. Also listened to a lot of old instrumental surf music. Memorable albums from that period: "The Decline of Western Civilization", and "The Wall" by Pink Floyd (I still listened to some other stuff too). 13-16 Still listening to KROQ. Went through all the styles that were popular - Rockabilly, Ska, "New Romantic", all the crap from the UK, etc. Favorites from the time: "Combat Rock" by the Clash, "Violent Femmes", "Discipline" by King Crimson, and of course "1999" by Prince. Briefly listened to NY style hip-hop and electro. Started making mix (not beat matched of course) tapes. 16-20 Started getting bored with KROQ, started seeing a girl who lived close to Melrose and tons of used record stores. Started buying all kinds of shit, but mostly completing collections of Doors, Zeppelin, Hendrix, etc. Was a huge Jim Morrison fan. Went back and bought a lot of old blues, british blues wannabes, psychedelic stuff (old King Crimson was great), almost anything. 21-23 Finally broke down and bought a CD player. Spent zillions getting stuff I already had on vinyl on disc. Got into LA style gangsta rap. Turned into a Club Kid, bought 12"s of my fave club hits. Tuned into the Manchester sound (as well as the mailing list) and dug Stone Roses and Primal Scream. 23-26 MARS FM came on the air. Got 808 state and discovered the Orb. Discovered DJ/dance record stores and started spending more money. Moved to the bay area, bought 1200's. Mostly into IDM right now, except that "Beach Blvd" is lodged in my CD player at work and Funkadelic is stuck in the one at home. Sorry about the obscure LA references. I also never really liked Art of Noise or industrial, if you can believe that! -- Eric Pederson PacTel Corporation eric@nit.pactel.com 510-210-8890
