On the contrary I would completely disagree. Apart from lcc and pro
radii, I would disregard this release entirely. I felt Confield was a
mixed bag with a good number of solid tunes, and thought Draft 7:30 to
be one of the best records the duo has put to plastic. This time
around, I feel they have completely missed the mark.
I feel the tunes are completely unfocused and quite boring. Their
tones, which are usually very inventive, are lacking. The rhythms, a
staple to the group (and recently have been genius enough to make up for
their dearth of melody) even less so. I would go so far as to say this
is a lazy effort, lacking any real focus that all of their previous
releases had. They've micromanaged these tunes to death. Sublimit
seems to turn into a different song every 3 minutes, lacking any real
direction or purpose - yet when its all over, I can't remember a single
distinctive tone or part that was memorable (except maybe that really
cheesy synth chord stab near the beginning, but that was horrid).
Usually no matter how bizarre or abstract their tunes got, Ae always
seemed to have a structure or composition in mind with their tunes.
Every loop variation seemed to hint at a purpose, an alterior motive.
Apart from the opening track and pro radii, the album is incredibly
spotty. And fermium is an embarrasingly bad tune for Ae.
To be fair, I'd say most of Ae's albums are a mixed bag with their
respective share of substandard tunes (usually completely overshadowed
by unrelenting classics of the genre, of course), but this record takes
the cake for me. These guys are used up.
I would advise anyone who doesn't like any post LP5 Ae to avoid this
release like the plague. And even those who do like some post LP5 Ae,
such as myself, to be very wary. Maybe check the tunes out on bleep and
buy 1 or 2 tracks off the album. If that.
