They use industry-standard lithium ion batteries. You can buy your own and replace them. Secondly, they're the same batteries many other mp3 players use. $99 is just the price Apple charges. You're free to buy third-party batteries. Apparently they can be had for as little as $30. If the battery goes out in a Zen or other unit you're going to have to pay the same amount.
