I think in order to survive and be relevant in the long run that every
good indie label needs to take some chances. And let's face it, even
though they're not all winners, you can't fault someone for trying some
different paths. In my mind all the great indies stopped toeing the
same line and eventually became known for just putting out good music
regardless of what genre it fell into (Beggars isn't exactly just known
for Bauhaus anymore, Matador, Sub Pop, Touch & Go). And I'm sure Warp,
much like us here, would like to think their fans listen to a lot of
different music and would be down for the fact that they're trying some
different things. I also think Warp also has enough acts sounding like
'Warp' to keep your die hard fans happy and don't need to sign more of
the same when those people are already doing it right.
