When I said, " find a new break" , I wasn't necessarily scorning or hating. Its just so much attention has been given to it that the universe of un-used breaks is being ignored. And that is all. Never said it was played out. "Funky Drummer" has been sampled on ~thousands~ more tracks. I never am bored with that either. So, atomly, I'm not saying its played out. Just the obsession with it. I'm not an amen hata', Amen. "I think one of the things that's pushed me away from IDM in recent years is this orientalism. The idea that a drum sound is played out- that making innovative "sounds" instead of tracks or mixes, is the problem. I'd rather listen to a solid hour-long minimal acid set than listen to some wank show off how many computations per second his Powerbook gets." Yes, I agree with all that. I enjoy checking out all ends of the spectrum. There's good stuff out there in so many corners, from simple to complex, from generic bangin' techno to dsp wank. Re: Hrvatski's use of "Amen"...I think even though he certainly pays respect to it, his incessant use of it was intended to be -somewhat- tongue in cheek. He did indeed use, almost exclusively, the amen break but fucked it up so well and restructured it so well that the -point- was the if you put your mind to it, you wouldn't need to use any other drum sample. Re: Photek....I also can't think of one track where he uses, "Amen". Maybe a snippet here and there but his samples were (are?) far less obvious.
