recently i'm really, really enjoying Binary Star - Masters of the Universe. VERY good. out of the last 30 albums i've heard this is the one i keep putting on.
i've also found that Amazon's various kinds of "maybe you will like this" features (other customers bought, lists, reviews) are a good place to browse around looking for names. on the Binary Star page (
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004ZDPK) you can see they mention Zion I, Hieroglyphics, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, Del, El-P... lots of good recommendations.
i am also enjoying Delinquent Habits, if you like Mexican/American hip-hop, and Freestyle Fellowship as well. check out the hip-hop section of cdbaby.com, too; you can listen to lots of tracks there and buy CDs from independent artists. there are also two freestyle fellowship album available from cdbaby.com if you want to preview/buy them there. (
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/freestylefell is one)
you should absolutely head on over to the Amazon link up there and listen to the previews of the Binary Star album. the first few songs (Reality Check, Conquistadors, Slang Blade) are some of my favorites on the album. Slang Blade is great but the clip does not do the song justice. there are two other clips on Amazon but unfortunately they are clips of intros and stupid stuff. really, if you couldn't tell, i'm loving this album.
