Seems I touched on a sensitive topic. To clarify, I have no qualms with
people dancing their ass off however they like at any show - people should
dance - it makes the whole experience more enjoyable (I know I was getting
down). The issue I was trying to address is this recurring phenomena of
people doing this Tai Chi 'calling of the spirits' thing at IDM shows (maybe
they do that dance everywhere and I only see them at IDM shows?). For one,
it strikes me as odd that a music so rich with rhythm inspires folks to do
this slow-motion psychedelic martial arts thing. Secondly, there's a reason
people do Tai Chi in the park (or in the grass seats at a Phish concert) -
it takes up space. It's pretty rude (and selfish) to expect the people
around you who shelled out their $15 to see their heroes perform to have to
accommodate your haphazard slo-mo kung-fu spirit circle, especially in such
a small venue.
Whatever, it's not my mission in life to be the dance police. If the divine
spirit is telling you to prance around like David Carradine on mescaline
then by all means.
Just don't shoot me because my mom dresses me funny.
