You're right, I do assume a lot. But considering the bands that warp has signed or nurtured during the last 2-3 years, they have usually carried two traits: They've been proven signed artists in the past, and they are of an exceptional quality. The lone exception to this has been Chris Clark, who's talent and originality in tone, style and energy are definitely deserving of the attention Warp gets, but if memory serves me right, he came out of nowhere. Mira Calix doesn't exude these qualities. Compare her with Warp's recent flirtations with Tortoise, Prefuse 73, APC, Beans, Merzbow, and the like. Warp is quickly latching into bigger markets and need to sell. Mira Calix has flair because she's a rarity: a woman, let alone an attractive one, who makes introvertedly abstract IDM music. Speaking from a marketing perspective, this is money. Let's look at the target audience: nerdy indie/rock/electronic males. I hate to tell you this, but marketing is sexist. Marketing by definition has to put people in boxes and play the stereotype game. This proven to make money, and the larger Warp gets, in order to sustain themselves, they will need to rely more and more on generalizations in their marketing tactics. While Warp may not even internally admit this, I bet its certainly one of the factors into keeping her around. I'd be curious to see how she's selling. And while the self righteous subscribers here are too PC to admit it, because they have penises and testosterone, it's an element in their mind.

In many ways, I believe so. I feel she was basically publishing her "lessons" in recording and writing. Any normal artist would not have this opportunity. Did she have a background as a producer before she worked at Warp?

I'm not saying Mira Calix is not a class act. And my calling her credibility into question only really stems from her musical output, which is what's really important, no? I feel there usually is a certain quality level at Warp. After hearing Skimskitta, I felt like I was listening to a demo album by a friend of mine who's been writing IDM for merely a year. And I'm not just trying to pick on Mira Calix.
