about the artists:
wednesday 11 >
A_DONTIGNY (no type)
One half of morceaux_de_machines, one third of Napalm Jazz, Aime Dontigny
has been working on sound possibilities for over 8 years. Although he has
played live alongside such figures as Martin Tétreault, Sam Shalabi, Diane
Labrosse & many others, this will be, incredibly, his first ever solo
musical performance. Cutting up & reassembling samples is his speciality,
as heard on a brand new EP with local label Deluge.
THE ABSTRAKTERS (machines)
The Abstrakters is a new all-stars hip-hop group from Quebec City,
featuring four collaborators coming from definitely distinct universes:
Hibernation (microphone), Boogaloo Shrimp (DJ), Patrick Bouchard
(electronics) & Erick Dorion (laptop). They like fat beats & they're
certainly not averse to strange noises. Why, they've been asked to rock
the house...
thursday 12 >
MAGALI BABIN (no type) + GUILLAUME THEROUX (no type/alterflow)
Montrealer Magali Babin is well known to everyone enthusiastic to tiny
musics & sound art at large. Her debut CD ('Chemin de fer' on No Type,
where else) has been received like a warm hug by afficionados
worldwide. Guillaume Theroux-Rancourt makes drone-based music as Le Chien
Borgne, & he runs Quebec City's own experimental powerhouse
Alterflow. They did a live duo a few months ago; it was so beautiful that
we had to ask them to do it again.
KM KREBS (no type/nishi, vancouver)
Vancouver-based Kevin M Krebs is a prolific composer with a number of web
releases under his belt (most recently the re-issue of his 'Solar Cycle 23'
on Autoplate), as well as a debut full-length CD, 'Tunguska', scheduled for
2003 under his 833-45 guise. Krebs' sound palette is wide but quite
unique, the meeting of deep, earthy rhythms, bleeps & drones, radio
emissions & natural phenomenae in general.
CLICK TRACY (subverseco, LA)
Click Tracy is one of the multiple personalities of LA-based phenomenon
Todd Drootin aka Books on Tape. In addition to his main Friday performance
(see below), Todd will be presenting this show as a funky, light & yet,
deeply felt homage to free jazz.
friday 13 (boo!) >
OEUF KORRECKT (no type)
Hot on the heels of his new CD 'Podweek', it's time for Oeuf Korreckt to
show what he's worth on stage! This reclusive craftsman of Impulse Tracker
persuasion has finally been adapting all of his hits into something he can
actually perform live, & the result will be presented for the first time in
the world ever, this Friday. Bleep, not ignorance, is bliss...
BOOKS ON TAPE (deathbomb arc/no type, LA)
Books on Tape's music could roughly be described as the unholy marriage
between Aphex Twin & The Pixies. As you might expect, it doesn't sound
like either, but this description does say something of the wild sarcastic
drive & inventive energy of Todd Drootin's music. Following hundreds of
web releases under as many aliases, a debut CD ('Throw Down Your Laptops',
Deathbomb Arc) will be launched in December 2002 as well as a 10" No Type
EP before the end of the year...
DICK RICHARDS (raum...musik, toronto)
Dick Richards might just be Toronto's finest rising star of minimal (&
not-so-minimal) techno, with a new CD/2*12" just out on prestigious German
label Raum...Musik. Deep, irreverent booty-shaking is his specialty. Yes,
we're saying it's absolutely very danceable! Yes, it's okay to just stroke
your chin too, but that might not feel very smart.
saturday 14 >
THEMOONSTEALINGPROJECT (no type/once.twice, baltimore)
A central figure of advanced electronic music in Baltimore, Jason Urick is
behind the once.twice festival of sound, which again took place last April,
featuring Richard Chartier, Timeblind, Sutekh, Tomas Jirku, Cex & many
others such as Urick's own Themoonstealingproject. His music can be said
to mix the best out of American minimalist music (Velvet Underground, Tony
Conrad...) & the simple sonic beauty of Alog or Sack & Blumm.
DISKETTE (once.twice, NYC)
A Baltimore expatriate, now living in NYC, Chris Coady aka Diskette is
another up-&-coming name in angular rhythms & bleep oddities. Having
played with Kid606 & EC8OR he also a regular fixture of the once.twice
music festival, now performing in Montreal for the first time!
ALPHACAT (no type, MA)
Alphacat is Lyric Morgan-O'Connor, who will be presenting an audio-visual
show with projections &, of course, an absurdly bombastic techno delirium
which stands no comparison. What to expect, but a sure shot feline robot riot?
WHILE (chocolate industries/musik aus strom, baltimore)
Chris Moore is underground IDM hero While, who released a seminal Musik Aus
Strom 12" back in the day, & then went on to produce 4 amazing CDs for
Chocolate Industries. His music delves on grounds not so foreign to those
of Richard Devine, Phoenecia, Lexaunculpt & the likes. His style & talent
are both refined to the point of madness, & what more, his live appearances
are extremely rare: this surprise visit to Montreal should not be missed!
