the only two things fennesz has done that even come close to touching the perfection of 'endless summer', in my opinion, are his two track cd 'fennesz plays' which i think is out on moikai or something, but maybe it got reissued on another label... i don't know, not too hard to find though and well worth the effort because he "covers" the songs 'don't talk (put your head on my shoulder)' by the beach boys and 'paint it black' by the rolling stones. while fennesz asserts that 'don't talk' is a very faithful cover and that an acapella vocal track fits over his song, i've yet to track down an acapella track to check it out for sure... though i know with certainty that paint it black is only a cover in the most rudimentary conceptual sense. and also his new split 12" with main out on fatcat... while i'm not a big main fan, fennesz returns to that soupy syrupy beautiful sound he's got on endless summer with the melodies now a bit darker and the drones a bit more longing and pensive. i don't really know too much about oval, though i do own ovalprocess... i know someone who knows him though and they told me about how the music is made... and while i'd like to be able to merely appreciate the end result, when you damn your album oval/process// you draw a bit of attention to it and obviously want people to talk about it or whatever... so i don't like automatically generated music is what i'm saying. i think it's a novel application of programming saavy to be able to construct a program that uses your input to construct its own songs, but i think it's more a testament to the remarkable artistic potential of machines than it is to the unwavering ingenue of the artist. gregory
