I'd like to bring a very important issue to everyone's attention.
My appoligies if this is a repeat topic.

In the meantime, We've spoken with the guys from
saveinternetradio.org. Turns
out they are in chicago, where my partner, Dave Meeker is from.
We told them that we were in for the fight and had
some pretty strong punches we would be throwing if the chance
arose. I
republished the article that Kurt wrote, and added banners to the
Selekta
Web site that link to the article.
you guys... while we are lucky to be in the music industry that we
*are* in (more underground, etc)... there is still a chance that
any of the
copyrighted materials that we play online could lead to us paying
a fee retroactive to october 1998. Now... PLEASE NOTE: the cost
is not 14 cents... it is .14 of a cent per song per listener.
Regardless... it is a crime and NEEDS to be stopped. Regardless of
how this effects the selekta, it will also effect other sites that
are run by our friends, sites that support the music that we make
and promote.
Please... read up on the legislation. And take 10 minutes out of
your day and spend 5 bucks in long distance and CALL YOUR
CONGRESSMAN! PLEASE?
Explain to them that this is going to kill all small businesses...
This is very, very, very, very important... and as we in selekta
land claim to be "proactive " and "defenders of the scene"...
well... THIS MIGHT be more important than anything weve come
across thusfar.
Please make your elected officals aware that we know about these
laws and don't approve of their far reaching scope. It is not
that people should not get paid for what they have done. Rather,
it is that you should not put in laws that have no limits. Did
you know that according to the DMCA, that all digital devices
will/are now required to have copy protection features built into
them. In other words, you will have to pay for an alarm clock
which comes with digital copy protection built in. Does this law
make sense to you? What is goin on now with CARP is the natural
extention. CARP is not the problem. The problem is the
DMCA. CARP is just a symptom of the problem. We need to address
DMCA to keep future CARPs from cropping up.
If any of you have questions... please feel free to ask.
just drop us an email @ info@selekta.com
We hope to bring as many people together to support this issue.
All the best-
Michelle
