Heh, yeah, it's been bugging me. There's so much enjoyable older music that it seems a real shame for the desire for something new to automatically equal the desire for something just released, rather than just for something I haven't heard yet. Especially when an older release is something from maybe '98 or whenever, it just seems ridiculous to me to apply arbitrary limits to what you're interested in checking out. The only excuse I can think of is if you're the worst kind of production nerd. Some examples: The first Slicker album 'Confidence in Duber' (on Hefty, no less!) is great fun. It seems to have more of a context now. Which is a fancy way of saying I've heard more stuff like it since I first got it, and that makes it a bit easier to digest. Also, I can never give enough praise to Harmonia's 'Musik von...' which just rocks my world. From '74, and a great listen for people into more recent German minimalism, bands like Seefeel, whatever.. dreamy, mesmerising. Pretty Boy Crossover released 'The Building and Formation' relatively recently, but that's mainly stuff from '98 and '99. I'm really enjoying that as well, and interviewed them for igloomag.com ... check that out shortly and hopefully it'll be up there. If anyone likes the idea of 70s soul stuff with some psychedelic and folk references, I hope you've checked out the Shuggie Otis reissue on Luaka Bop. That was my definite favourite discovery of 2001, although again it's from the 70s. Sorta covers what's nice about someone like Nick Drake and someone like, I dunno, maybe Al Green or Bill Withers when they're on form. Then there's these crazy organ instrumentals in there that are like Stereolab or something... Ok, enough rambling.
