I honestly have only heard very little vaporwave other than Lopatin's output. So here is what I think about Lopatin's output and if you call it all vaporwave then maybe this also what I think vaporwave is. Music is a culture vampire sucking everything in sight and is constantly recycled, broken down and put back together again in different ways. Vaporwave to me seems to be that process, but stripped down to a level where it induces nostalgia because you can notice all those elements that are familiar without too much analysis. It seems like it's taking the piss because really, how can you not take the piss out of what we thought was cool in the decades preceding the one we're in? It is a couple of decades (maybe a few) of our past, chewed up and spat back out at us. Music, culture, space and time; it's all transient with random peaks and troughs and vaporwave explores those peaks and troughs in our western consumerist culture. It cycles through our culture timeline and every now and then it briefly holds up a magnifying glass to random parts exposing our past treasures and in turn our throw away nature.
