I am amazed at how similar Microstoria and Cathars sound sometimes. They
both contain those fluttering Cologne pseudo-melodies and really ambient,
exceptionally space-defining moments of amazing beauty. I'm surprised I
haven't seen more mention of Cathars' "Amorpheus" CD on this list, as it
seems many members would be very into it. (similar to much of what you
mentioned)
I've never had too much of a stomach for microwave releases. Pita, for
example, can be alternately illicit a profound reaction or just give me a
headache. When I first got "seven tons for free" I routed it through a
lowpass filter to even be able to listen to it without my head exploding a
la "scanners".
Zammuto has an obviously different take on music, which I believe helps
give him his very fresh sound. He once told me something to the effect
of, "I'm scared of anything with black and white keys" :)
