And of course Jeff Davis' excellent Rotator Locator :
http://www.hyperreal.org/music/rotator/
As part of the IDM faq however, Im am assessing just how much database
stuff ill be able to get away with. Id like to make the ultimate page
complete with Yahoo! one-click mapping, and maybe a user feedback rating
system for shops...
I am also working on a super high-tech discography engine that is
*totally* dynamic. No internet spotter is worth a damn without knowing
the way to Lazlos Discography machine:
http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs
I would never want to re-invent the wheel with either Jeff's or Lazlo's
(another Ernie!!) or even CDNow's site but in my mind lives this strange
all-in-one site idea of music heaven that Im still not sure I can
actually pull off. A one stop 'electronica' site where you could
research/review/find our music. Imagine drilling through cross
reference links until you found exactly what you wanted:
<dream>
CLICK to find all labels with "S"
returns list of S labels
CLICK on "Skam"
returns list of Skam releases (with or without thumbnails or tracklisting)
CLICK on "Skampler"
returns Skampler detail with full tracklisting, large thumbnails,
artists, notes and user reviews
CLICK on "Keynell" track
returns Gescom page, with Gescom discography
CLICK on Sean Booth
returns all releases/tracks he had a hand in writing
</dream>
A great discography like a great internet store, but it wouldnt be about
selling music, and we would list OOP, deleted and unobtainables so it
would be complete. And the work could be down by volunteers with
accounts..I also could take exports of existing databases (data migration
is my specialty) but the information donor would have to satisfied that
they would get credit for all their had work. ALL THEORETICAL . its just
an FAQ for now
I build these kinds of web pages all the time to pay my bills, so I tend
to think about it alot since Im a music fiend. Lots of great SIMILAR
work exists online, but I want to see how far I can take the concepts and
still be practical.
Another thing is motivation - will it last or am I full of sh*t?
(rhetorical people!)
Well see what happens this summer
