plaid - monsoon 12” (warp) so the illusive ones return, after a year tied to bjork’s apron strings with only a clutch of frankly uninspired remixes for the likes of nicolette, deelite & acacia to speak for them, ed handley & andy turner re enter the world of the living with this taster for their (now fully mastered) debut album for warp. and as the slogan in one american presidential campaign went ‘where’s the beef’? anyone seduced by the rhythmical complexity and inventive playfulness of tracks like ‘scoobs in columbia’ & ‘angry dolphin’ or the breathtaking emotion of ‘reshi’ or ‘object orient’ will be deeply disappointed by these 3 tracks, “the feeling” has gone to be replaced by a multi duplexity of sins, including polished over production, uninventive rhythms & cliched strings, it’s as if all the life has been squeezed out of the tracks leaving music pleasant to the ear but with all the depth of a chunk of medium grade cardboard to my ears their are distinct signs of a real lack in confidence, no dashing brush strokes of sound but rather small careful dot to dots, you can almost hear the lines that have have been pencilled in and rubbed out again and again in a frantic effort to present the finished article, yes folks its just to damn “nice” and that is simply not good enough ken downie must be quietly chuckling over his cocoa sm@4thworld http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/4thworld/ purpose:cutting edge mail order:archive:new skool electronica 60m dj mix:label: 01 [boards of canda, fabric soap stars, lucky & easy, itchabug,& 1]12" due 10/97
