Normally, I would be dissing RDJ right off the bat. Phrases like
"Arrogant Bullshitter" and "Wanker" (anglophile alert) have often come
to mind upon hearing most of his output. (The stuff I've heard,
anyway.) An awful lot of I Care Because You Do, really irritated me,
and Ventolin...well, not my cup of tea, to put it mildly. But Alberto
Balsam almost made me cry the first time I heard it. (Did I mention I
get very visceral responses to music? Am I unusual in getting goosbumps
durning a really wicked drum roll or other musical climax?)
Anyhow, Alberto B. made me think, "If he can do this, then I must
assume that his other tracks have integrity too. Though some of them
are certainly intended to be humourous, none of them are intended as
insults to the listener." This realization re-opened my mind to Aphex.
RDJ is certainly a challenge to my newly opened mind. Why make so many
good tracks so short? I can only say that I do enjoy listening to the
album as a whole, usually a couple of times in a row. It has a nice
flow and if you forget that the individual tracks are so short, the 32
min. listen that is RDJ is extremely pleasant.
my $.02,

I guess the hoards of us who think it sucks just don't get it.
Then again maybe we're just getting to old for noise.
