I don't think acid house had all that great an impact on IDM as we know it, except perhaps as a cultural moment. Besides, Chicago is known for its acid, not Detroit. :)

Good man. For those that don't already know about Kraftwerk, the place to start is 'Computer World.' Here's a few "roots of IDM" recommendations: Art of Noise - 'Daft' ('84, ZTT UK: ZCID Q2) * Eno/Byrne - 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts' ('81, Sire US: 6093-2) Keith LeBlanc - 'Major Malfunction' ('86, World UK: EFA CD 26-07952) # * - Acceptable substitute: Art of Noise - 'Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise?' # - Soon to be reissued on Blanc UK with bonus tracks. Acceptable substitute: Gary Clail's Tackhead Sound System - 'Tackhead Tape Time' And any one of these comps (I like 'Relics' best): 'Techno One and Two' (2 discs, '90, Ten UK: DIXCD 123) 'RetroTechno/DetroitDefinitive: Emotions Electric' ('91, Network UK: RETRO CD1) 'Relics: A Transmat Compilation' ('92, Transmat/Buzz BE: BZZCD 10) C. -- cspot@hyperreal.com (Chris.Hilker) "Blue ice cubes?
