greetings from the demon workshop wow wot a crazy year this has been for music ... so many records making my head go round i don't know where to start firstly i saw KEN ISHI play again at the R&S party and he is indeed god. The assembled trendies were just gobsmacked so i leaned over and told him to turn it UPPP!! and then the place went wild. yes my kittlings it was a wondrous sight to behold p next - i sat down and listened to a whole pile of tunes over the hols, and several of them blew me away ... the GESCOM ep - this is modern electronica at its best oh boy this is what techno is all about etc one track is fucking hard and the rest are way out there ... exciting innovative esoteric and on the nail all four trax are masterpieces of idm-techno respect to autechre and darrel fitton for it is they ... autechre also contribute to clear records, a new electro label that mean business!! the jedi knights single is great crossing '82 rhythms with '94 production to devastating effect jungle just gets more and more sophisticated and brilliant .. new tricknological stylings and fierce rhythms Ambient Jungle is already here as producers scratch and snatch from ambient and idm tunes and a whole new sense of style is emerging predict an idm-jungle fusion that may as well be called art-core ... i rilly dig all of DJ crystal's tunes too , and wot about SPANNERS this is one amazin LP, their best yet, black dog rule the world ... absolutely no concessions to normality .. theres a lot of music on this record! more than most artists have in a career! also check their trax on the UNKLE ep on MoWax ... Normally things as trendy as Mowax usually suck But ... hey, how can i criticise a record that samples Timmy Leary and Terry Riley, employs Portishead and Black Dog, namechecks Sun Ra and comes in a double picture disk to make collectors drool ... MoWax continue to build bridges between scenes with great success .. Triphop will crossover in the states this year with a bang ... also - lots of UK djs will be remixing US hiphop acts ha ha cos that's where the money is ... lets just start alt.music.triphop now, shall we?? back in the techno world but only just bedouin ascent's LP still amazes and loads of people have picked up on it which suprised me ... it deserves all the praise it gets as does vibert & simmonds WEIRS and not forgetting the enormous BLUFF LIMBO all use kinda 8=bit crunchy sounds to great effect and show original flair & creativity outta tha bedroom into your hearts Robert Hoods EP on M-Plant is just brilliant a new generation of detroit yes please! This is too good for the Germans, we need it over here! Also i heard CONNECTION MACHINE and it blew my mind oh boy watch PLANET E for some action! DAN CURTIN has made lots of friends the world over this is a new side to US techno, the music is growing up being on peacefrog and sublime does no harm ... the album silicon dawn is in a lot of boxes now! and the chilled track from that is now on STRICTLY RHYTHMs 'Deep & Low' a suprising & welcome entry into the ambient dub field! also CRISTIAN VOGEL has made his mark this year a chilean englishman with a german name if you liked WE EQUATE MACHINES WITH FUNKINESS or his album BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND then check out the CABBAGE HEAD collectiv and their track POTATO SALAD 150 bpm of pure soft technology its on OFF THE MAP a benefit LP for Advance party ... it's for a good cause fighting the CJA and also has my old friends H.I.A. (hey - i never said it was all good tho!) so much amazing music around and so few djs with the BOLLOX to play any of it ... so i guess when you go out on saturday you'll get the usual boom- boom - boom - boom - crap with the occasional sampled diva the underground will ALWAYS find a new way ... the industry will ALWAYS try to close it down ... and just when it thinks all the nails are in the coffin underground techno will burst out again and again in new and more convoluted styles... BUT with music this good and this varied Methinks that if you think the state of the art means the Stone Roses impersonating the Black Crowes then you are a sad case indeed NOW that's been a long rant indeed and probably enough in there to upset everybody so i'll leave with a merry solstice greeting and happy new ears to all especially those in the A&R profession ... remember , it's only music morris -------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- GLOBAL CHILLAGE the new LP from IRRESISTIBLE FORCE out NOW!!! --- --- check out Mixmaster Morris's ambient information server at --- --- http://www.southern.com/MMM/homepage.html (in the uk) --- --- http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/trellos/homepage.html (in the US) --- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
