808 State - "Bombadin"/"Marathon" CD5 (Tommy Boy TBXCD 629) Disc Running Time: 36:08 1) Bombadin (Barta Mix) 2) Bombadin (Original Quica) 3) Marathon (Club 12" Mix) 4) Marathon (Drumpella) 5) Bombadin (Bombapella) 6) Bombadin (Wakacherwaka Mix) 7) Marathon (Original 2 Four Pub Mix) It's out finally - the new CD5 from 808 State. I have no idea if a new album is in the works. "Bombadin" is a latin flavored track reminiscent of their recent remix of Jon Hassell's "Voiceprint". A very swingy house rhythm, with live latin percussion by Colin Seddon. However, the track fails because of the extremely annoying sample Mssrs. Massey and company use. Two or three male voices chant "Bombadin Ba Ba Bombadin....." over and over. I don't have a BPM register, but I guestimate the track is around 150-160 BPM. The "Original Quica" mix is the best of all the versions. "Marathon" is another house track, but without the latin flavor, or annoying sample. The drums echo their earlier "Repo Reaper" track, and run about 150BPM. This track kicks hard, and is worth the purchase price of this CD5. Just to be anal, 'voiceprint' is a few years old. I remember wanting it when i liked 808 state. :) It only recently got a domestic release. From a short listen of the new 808 tracks, i liked 'marathon' only a bit more than 'bombadin', which sounded pretty boring. what happened to 808 state? Was martin price's influence on the group so pronounced? I haven't heard anything i *really* liked since _ex-el_. babbling, mikebee

Unfortunately, i could not agree more. I've liked their stuff since NewBuild. The last album, yuch, and with has-been rock stars like that Ian guy-even worse! I remember reading in NME how much he hated techno, i guess after his 'career' took a nose dive he'd try anything to get back on top. Anyway, sorry to be anal but voiceprint has been domestic for years on vinyl, it just got a CD release, very strange, not? And what's up with Price? I've never seen his Switzerland stuff, anyone else? enjoy the weekend time...space...transmat@teleport.com bleep on!
