sounds like someone has got a hold of a DJ Keoki white (on moonshine) interested to hear what it sounds like (thump?,boom?,bap?,funk?,junk?) keoki (NYC) has been around and he's got the P.R. to prove it (go look at the cover of his moonshine cd for the full on guffaw) his mixing (slicker 'n snot) is a ton better than his music making (so far) I apologize to the kids outside of Boston for my area specific posts this morning. . .but i believe it was pertinent (I'm sure there are some beantown idmers outthere) (thanks jetta!) i found it quite ironic that the one kid i pissed off (for posting) sent his ire to the whole list (gee, thanks for looking out for us!) Please consider surgery for the removal of that stick up your booty. Teep

well if his mixing is better than his music making then his music must be really bad becuase his mixing is crap. Most of the time the guy is too drug-phuqed to match two beats together. I've been hearing him spin off and on since the eighties and more times than not, he just mixes in the next track during an ambient break or the end of a track. I've heard Sven Vath do this but at least Sven has a better selection of tracks. Don't mean to sound flameish but I'm sick of hearing Keoki hype. Yes he's been around for a long time but that doesn't necessarily mean he's good. Basically he has a bunch of club kids who follow him around anywhere he goes because of his 'fabulous' attitude. These kids could probably care less and know even less about the music. will

Re: keoki (isn't that kAy-o-key? sounds japanese) ^ It makes me sick hearing about these "big name" DJs when they haven't got 100% technique. It sucks that it turns out to be who they know and what attitude they've got, not which skills they have and what records they've got... It makes me sick hearing about these "big name" musicians who can't even *play* _real_ instruments... C'mon, I thought we demolished the olden ideas about "skill" and technique about the time that the Sex Pistols killed off ELP... Let's not bring all the tired old muso arguments into the 90's. ----------------------------------------------------------------- dave walker, detroit art services marmoset@msen.com me & my robots

I played a couple of gigs in NY last year with Keoki. He's a nice enough guy. Pretty personable. Once he and Julie Jules (editor of that club kid zine Project X) were so whacked out on whatever that they danced, yes DANCED, on my records. They had knocked a couple out of my bag and didn't notice while they continued to shake it on my vinyl. I guess they liked my groove but that's no excuse to scratch up out of print rarities. He said that he would give me something in return but I never heard from him. The real problem with his style is that he'll play anything just to be a superstar. I tend to like DJ's who want to educate the crowd or who stick to a distinctive style. Keoki will play all over the place in one night. Anyway this is starting to sound like an .alt.raves posting so I'll quit. -robert

Well, I heard him spin at 2008 in St. Louis last month, not knowing *anything* about him other than that he was a popular DJ from the Limelight in NYC, and I thought he did a *great* job. Cool-ish proggy-house (by _no_ means one of my preferred styles), spun well with careful attention paid to set-sequencing. One of the promoters was talking about how, unlike most out-of-town jocks, he arrived early and helped them work on the sound, and how he stayed around the next morning spinning at the after party for free... (yes, he was in town already and probably got plenty from the main divine playground event, but still..) my record suggestion of the week - the stunning rabbit in the moon remix of velocity's 'lust' on superstition.. and i'm not just saying that because rabbit in the moon are from florida.. ;)

Well, if you're referring to the We Are One CD, then that would be "High Lonesone Sound System sucks," because Keoki's input in that project was, to say the least, minimal... Mike Kandel told me the other day that he once claimed he made Eden Transmission's "I'm so High!" Peace, Matt <(hcy)>
