If thats the bit with the 'transformation .... ' bla bla bla, bit (at end of the brown lp), its from an Open University course (= univ. degree course correspondance based via tv in uk - really old programmes with lectureres wearing kipper ties) programme. I bet you didnt know that! (look, it wasnt me ok. one of my mates was bored 1 night and happened to notice it !) Chris.

Actually, the 'time becomes a loop' sample (1st track of brown album) is from Star Trek the Next Generation -- an episode where the Enterprise gets caught in a time warp, and Lt. Warf expounds on how 'time becomes a loop..' _____________________________________________________________________________ Colin Evans +\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+ k93ce01@hobbes.kzoo.edu Kalamazoo College +\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+\+ Those were the days... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

hey... this is kinda off the subject, but has anyone heard steve reich's "come out" [recorded in the mid-60's]... he uses the same sort of trick that orbital uses with that sample on the voice of a guy talking about being beaten by the police... and even earlier than that he did something similar with the voice of a pentacostal preacher on "it's gonna rain" --- that gets quite beautiful and chaotic towards the end when there are eight different loops all slowly getting out of sync... steve reich's cool... and in case any fan of the orb doesn't know, "little fluffy clouds" samples a truly beautiful steve reich/ pat methany song whose name escapes me at the moment [it's on the end of the "different trains" cd he did with kronos quartet at any rate]...

I cant stand the voice on l.f.clouds, so never noticed. However the above track, 'electric counterpoint' is highly recommended. He layers many tape samples of Metheny's guitar playing over each other, and.. and. get it! Later in the piece, theres even mellow sub-bass! The 1st track 'dif.trains' is amazing too. It has the K. quartet treated in the same manner (and not being allowed to abuse their instruments) together with vocal samples and train noises. Chris. ps. always intersted to hear about older 'idm roots' classics like Reich. Any one else want to suggest their fave.s?

Music for 18 Musicians is a great one. 1 track only (about an hour or so). :) Janne

Well, in a similar style, I've always liked Terry Riley. His "biggest hit" is probably "in C," a wonderful performance of which (from 1968) is available on CD from CBS. The piece is a simple 53-figure progression; each musician decides when to move to the next figure, as well as when to pause for a measure and other such things. A piano pulse in C provides the "beat." Riley's "Rainbow in Curved Air" is a later piece that many in the 60's found more accessible. However, I find "in C" more interesting, and I think it's also easier to find.

Big UP on Terry Riley!! I love "in C", and, while I prefer "A Rainbow in Curved Air", both are essential adds to any list of founding-father drone music. His LP with John Cale from 1970 or so, "Church of Anthrax", is excellent as well. Stu 8)

"The Moebius" Yeah, yeah, yeah. y. I got it the other day. amaing how he creates the pulsing feel. sounds very electronic, but isnt. also similar to 'diff. trains' in a way. Anyway, I was looking through the sleevenotes and noticed... Ken Ishii: Cello ... yes ? no ? is this just a coincidence, or what? Chris.

"Come Out" is a very early Reich piece. He was playing with tape loops and delay -- seems kind of obvious now -- and got some incredible sounds. I would recommend it to any of you that are convinced that there are only two sounds (and one of them is silence). But if you have to have only one, I would agree with Janne, Music for 18 Musicians is the classic. steve
