APHEX TWIN "On" Video
The video was okay, though, I can't really judge because I haven't seen any videos before for techno songs. All I can say is that it wasn't what I expected. What did I expect? Well, not a bunch of "found objects" going all over the screen, and not the "nautical" theme, by the ocean, a diver beating RDJ's image up (or trying to), or the ear and picture frame (neeeeeer...... faaarrr-----Sesame Street). I was expecting a bunch of nature type things, a waterfall to go with the tinkling opening of the song, and something really deep and earthy to go with the bass beats, maybe with some computer graphics (have I been to too many raves?), with the predominant colors being yellow, blue, brown, and green. Whatever........ I was disappointed in how the VJ afterwards didn't give much credit, though he _did_ give the essentials (name of artist and title, etc.), and then went back to the grunge stuff sitting right next to him. The video also kinda lost its fun, dance effect (idm effect) sitting amongst the grunge alternative stuff that takes up most of 120 minutes......... I wish there was a 120 just for dance, techno videos, that would be great! :) I did love the cardboard stand up of RDJ in the video, kinda defiant looking.........

Wow I really lucked out because I didn't read the post about the AFX Twin video last night but just happened to be flipping and passing through MTV when I saw an interesting video, which many people have described well enough. Since I have never heard "On", I had no idea this was RDJ himself but I was thinking to myself 'If I didn't know better, I'd swear this was Aphex Twin music, but no way is MTV that cool'. They credited the song to SAW II, why is this? Did he throw that onto SAW II? For a man who claims to have written >10,000 pieces as one person said (who was that person, and am I quoting him right?) I find this self-contradictory. Oh yeah, what do people think about his statement that he can't name all his songs because he has written too many? Is this bullshit or what! Even assuming that he _has_ written >10,000 songs, he could still take a few minutes more to name the songs that he _releases_! It's quite annoying to have to refer to a song as 00.08351387.563^23.... ___ (:)====/__/\=(:)(:)============================(:)====================(:) |\| _\_ \ \|\||=| Tai Nguyen |\| email address: |=| |=| /__/\_\ \=||\| Cornell University |=| thn1@cornell.edu |\| |\| / /\ __/\|(:)============================(:)====================(:) |=|/ / /\ \ |=||=| "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, |=| |\/__/ \_\/ |\||\| and statistics." |\| |=\__\/\ \ |=||=| - Mark Twain |=| (:)==\__\/===(:)(:)===================================================(:)

Perhaps he talked it over with Warp and decided it was a good idea. Maybe he felt that "On" was a good enough track that it should appear on an album, thus gaining some permanence, and not a single that will be deleted in a few months.

I don't at all. "On" is an above-average track for RDJ, and I think putting it on the album rather than a substandard track is a step in the right direction away from "release any old track even if it isn't that great."

Music is nonverbal. I don't think it's outrageous not to title a piece of music (and even though I hate comparisons between techno and classical music, how many pieces from that era have "titles" like "Piano Concerto #5"?). Like Derrick May said, "It Is What It Is" (and interestingly, that track's remix appears on the 'Transmat Relics' comp under the title "MS 6," after the cat number of the 12" the track was on).

If it only takes a few minutes to name a song, why don't you do it yourself? There's nothing stopping you from coming up with your own titles. C. -- (Chris.Hilker) cspot@netcom.com

The point I was trying to make was that he's full of shit because he says he _can't_ name all of his songs but the obvious answer to that is that you only have to name the ones you release. Also, naming the songs myself wouldn't help any because _I_ know what song I'm talking about - being able to refer to a song so that _others_ know which one I'm talking about is what is needed. ___ (:)====/__/\=(:)(:)============================(:)====================(:) |\| _\_ \ \|\||=| Tai Nguyen |\| email address: |=| |=| /__/\_\ \=||\| Cornell University |=| thn1@cornell.edu |\| |\| / /\ __/\|(:)============================(:)====================(:) |=|/ / /\ \ |=||=| "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, |=| |\/__/ \_\/ |\||\| and statistics." |\| |=\__\/\ \ |=||=| - Mark Twain |=| (:)==\__\/===(:)(:)===================================================(:) ================(:) |=|/ / /\ \ |=||=| "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, |=| |\/__/ \_\/ |\||\| and statistics." |\| |=\__\/\ \ |=||=| - Mark Twain |=| (:)==\__\/===(:)(:)===================================================(:)
