Deep Forest review and comments
Several people have asked about "Deep Forest", so I thought I'd mention that there is a review of "Deep Forest" at techno.stanford.edu, in directory /pub/ambient/reviews/berry/deep.forest.Z . Jon Drukman compared Deep Forest to Enigma in an earlier message, and I tend to agree. A good rule of thumb is that however you feel about "MCMXC a.D." is how you'll feel about "Deep Forest". I feel madly in love with both groups; Jon Drukman found both groups tiring, and for the same reason; and in general, everyone I know who knows of both groups tends to have similar responses to both of them. So if you loved "MCMXC a.D.", pick up "Deep Forest" as soon as possible. Hope this helps. Rob Berry (who's still waiting for "Cross of Changes" to arrive here, and wishing Deep Forest would come out with a second album.)

er... actually, i really love the Enigma album. all i said was that it uses the same lead sound over & over again and *that* gets a little annoying. Deep Forest has the same production trick and thus falls into the same trap. However, overall, I don't think Deep Forest is as strong an album as Enigma's.

They've got a very pricy import copy of Cross Of Changes at BPM that's been tempting me for quite a while. I don't know if I can hold out for the domestic release date... steveb@thed.usup.uk22.bull.co.uk (Steve Bacall) writes:

all i know is that it's two french keyboard geeks. Jon Drukman jdrukman%dlsun87@oracle.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This calls for a very special blend of psychology and extreme violence.

My apologies-- I misunderstood you. (Bad Rob! No donut! :-) Although I love both groups, I agree with your statement that "Deep Forest" is not as strong as "MCMXC a.D." For one thing, "Deep Forest" is way too repeti- tive ("White Whisper" is especially guilty of this.) For another, "Deep Forest" is not as "coherent" as "MCMXC a.D." Whereas the latter is essentially one extended song, the former hops all over the mood spectrum. This makes it more difficult to immerse oneself in the album. (Of course, the flip side of this is that "Deep Forest" has more variety, mood- wise, than "MCMXC a.D.")

Long as I'm here... can anybody recommend other groups in the same vein as Enigma or Deep Forest? Rob Berry

I think I saw on the new release list that Cross Of Changes is supposed to be released today (Jan 25th) domestically. At least I hope so, since I'll be making a trip to Turtles to get it today. -- ccastge@prism.gatech.edu | All of us get lost in the darkness, a.k.a., Guy Elden Jr. | Dreamers learn to steer by the stars...
