I think it is safe to say in Intelligent Dance Music that some bands (or some band's pieces) are going to rock harder. Most of the reason that I am so *totally* into this new music is that it holds great promise for the future. Still some of the artists are more nimble than others. For instance the breakdown on D-scape is incredible. On the other hand, most of black dog's music is so nerdy, it doesn't flow. The reason I listen to IDM is because it "has no history" whereas nearly everything else does. Well, maybe things like Tangerine Dream or Kraftwerk but those bands are not even 20 years old yet. "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dreams" The dreams I dream are of the future. Intangible yet romantic all the same. My $0.02. Stewart

interesting. unfortunately, i think this idm stuff is not nearly as "futuristic" as one would hope.

well, a short history isn't "no history." check out the old detroit stuff if you can find it - a good starting point would be the transmat "relics" compilation. black dog and b12 and fuse are nicking all their ideas from detroit (although at least richie (fuse) hawtin is completely open about it.) Having just bought Black Dog's latest release, "Temple of Transparent Balls", I can't really agree that they are "nicking all their ideas from detroit". There are tracks on this CD that bears little or no resemblance to the old Detroit school of Techno, especially in their use of rhythm, tempo and time signatures. I admit their Detroit *influence* is quite obvious on their last (?) release, "Bytes", but I think they're doing something new with whatever they have in their head of other peoples notes and chords (haven't we all?). As an example, check out their last track on "Temple..."; this is definitely not Detroit, I'd say more a mix of Moscow and Ireland. :) Anyways, how long has it been since music was revolutionized, not just evolutionized?
