Hi, I'm wondering what clever little vinyl manipulation secrets any of you have out there to make beautiful ambient noises from scrap-pile vinyl. Of course there's the old standard of drilling an off-center hole. Here's a fun one I just picked up... This works best on a non-rhythmic album like an old eno record or something. Take a razorblade and carefully cut straight lines between the center of the album to the outer edge. not too deep or you'll fuck your needle too bad. space the cuts at consistent intervals (two to four cuts total, dividing the record into halfs or quarters). If you drag the razor blade from the center to the outer edge of the record, the pop will be in one channel; and if you drag the blade from the outer edge to the center, the pop will be in the other channel... so it's stereo, but I forget which direction pushed the signal to the left channel or right channel... It creates a nice rhythmic sound. Also, if you take a really hot piece of metal and hold it near the grooves (don't touch the vinyl) just long enough to slightly melt them (I said *slightly*), you'll get a deep *whump* sound.
