well... being as i was at a couple parties with my Abercrombie friends, they all like Dave Mathews and such, so i was forced to listen to that sort of music all night, although i did manage to sneak out to my car at about 12:15 and listen to my Analogue Bubblebath 5 CD-R and listen to tracks 1 and 8 :) sam --- esa ruoho <esaruoho@dlc.fi> wrote:

OK. you asked for it! here's what was played, though i wasn't djing it, it was on where i happened to be and out of my control. friday dec 31 6PM to midnight "top 100 songs of 1999" on a commercial pop station. i wasn't paying that much attention, but there was yer basic shania twain, brtittney spears et al and backstreet boys were #1. considering they sold 6.9 copies of their new album in 1999, that's no shocker (yes, I *am* full of useless information :)). saturday jan 1 12 midnight to 3AM at a friend's party, which was quite sedate. was exhausted and fighting to stay awake. i believe the music played was cds from johnny favorite and the swing orchestra (a local band from halifax) and something from the eurythmics, maybe something else. in the past i've been Mr. Take-Over- The-Host's-Stereo-System at parties, but i've reformed myself. tv was switched between the various news channels that were fireworks-focused. 3AM cabbed it home to bed. 8AM to 4pm today. see the first entry, heard a different part of the chart, still didn't pay much attention. should have brought some cds to listen to, but was too tired to think about it when i stumbled out of bed, showered, and ran to work on time. andrew duke :) ps i truly hope others had more exciting musics in their lives last night/this mornin'. esa ruoho wrote:

I made myself a minidisc consisting of Gas' Oktember and a track off Konigsforst along with some Brinkmann (max/ernst), Takemura's Meteor EP and the last track on ska007 (one of the keynell remixes), calling it the "soundtrack to the millenium"! I thought those tracks were very epic and appropriate. I was at an empty beach in my socal town listening to all this stuff as the last darkness of the 20th century meshed with the light of the 21st, and despite that ghastly pretense I veritably enjoyed myself. -TO --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Lucky you - it sounds as though you got to do exactly what pleased YOU, without having to feel responsible in any way to family / friends / peer pressure. Good on ya ! For me, the evening itself passed without too much excitement - we let off fireworks ourselves and our neighbours put on a really brilliant pyro show which we were lucky enough to be able to get a clear view of. After some sleep, at 6am I headed off to Table Mountain (one of the chakras of the earth - apparently?! Never knew this, and I live on the slopes of it :-) ) and it was (unfortunately for me, solitude- seeking as I was) totally chock-a-block full of cars and people, many of whom obviously tourists. The cable cars were running throughout the night and many people had spent the night on top of the mountain (an amazing vantage point and truly beautiful place). I just drove way past the melee and sat on a rock for half an hour, observing the first sunrise of the new year. Music? In my car I had my beloved cassette of Surreal Sheep's Aural Expansion from '95. Still a huge favourite. Hello back, my buddy Thomas :-) I wrote another mail just now about what I got up to (not much!) and for the rest of SA? According the the local news, it was a more sedate and quiet New Year than most. It seems most people were content to stay home with their families. There was a big 'do' on Robben Island - former political prison island - which had a lot of TV coverage. Many of my friends are currently still at a 4-day outdoor trance event (not my cuppa chai) held in farmlands about an hour's drive out of the city (Cape Town). I'm sure I'll hear all about that when the come back - lots of Big Names in the trance genre were slated to play. Also, Juno Reactor were playing the annual Synergy party which this year was headed by Danny Rampling. Last year it attracted 17,000 ravers (I was one of them!) but I was struck by the commercialism of the event, backed by Benson & Hedges, whose logo towered mightly everywhere. PS : so you DID play "The End' :-))) I thought you were pulling my leg. Shame on you for being so negative ... let's have something more UPLIFTING, eh? Maybe I should have gone to Danny Rampling after all ... ha ha. I know *I'm* hurt by this. And I'm sure the rest of us in IDM-land are stifling back tears even as we wonder...1) Exactly what it is you expected when you subbed to what began as the Aphex list (or who convinced you that IDM = embrace the common radioslop club)...2) How you expect to remain faithful to a resolution which you've already violated....3) Why you think we care what you think....and 4)What in the world "make believe intentions of the list" means. Snobs? Of course. And a good deal of us don't care what the rest of us think are the emperor's new clothes, nor do we fall at the feet of the latest blast of noise. Some of us, though, happen to like things you probably wouldn't understand. Some of us have been listening to things considered "off the beaten path" long before you were probably born (judging from your posturing - which seems elitist in its own YOUNG way) and some of us listen to quite a wide variety of things because many of us are simply music geeks in general. Maybe you can find a nice list in the year 2000 where you will roam free, graze numbly on whatever you are fed and nobody will offend you. Good luck. (aside to the rest of the list : When is the next vote on the new make believe pretensions of the list for 2000?) np- that latest AFX cdr. jeff Shirei3000@aol.com wrote:

Funny, I brought my new year in by watching _Back to the Future_ and chuckling about Mr. Lewis' cameo in the film. It's a small world after all .... Anybody got a Four Tet discography? I figure 5 releases so far ... anybody want to help ?!? Mr. Hebden's work here is far superior to Fridge. The _Misnomer_ ep is at the very top of my best-of-year list. J Bonus round: RE:
