Just heard that the rumors are true: Coldplay's "Talk" (their new single) nicks the riff from Kraftwerk's "Computer Love" (apparently done legally): I hadn't heard the Coldplay track that uses the Kraftwerk riff till this thread came up on the 313 list (had only heard rumors). If anyone wants to compare: http://www.last.fm/music/Coldplay/_/Talk (click on the green triangle to the left of "Talk") and if you don't have your copy of Kraftwerk's Computer Love handy: http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/store/artist/album/0,,116410,00.html (but listen to the Windows Media clip cos the RealPlayer clip uses a different part of the song). My wife (knows Kraftwerk, not Coldplay) just heard me play the comparison and she said "Kraftwerk should sue". I hope Kraftwerk get tons of royalties from this. ugh. coldplay is just horrid. at best they are passably generic, at worst they are a watered-down, hyper-commercialized version of the most populist tendencies of decade-old radiohead. when that band got into a rut, they listened to electronic music, were rejuvenated by it, and namechecked their faves in dozens of interviews, helping the careers of lali puna, fourtet, and anyone on warp records. when they did actually sample something, it was from relatively obscure modern electronic composer paul lansky, not the same fucking band everyone else has been sampling since 1982 and which is the hippest electronic name to drop right now. i'd suggest a net project illegally sampling coldplay songs and fucking them up with electronics but it's not worth anyone's time. besides, you can get more useful samples from the dead air space between radio broadcasts than from a coldplay song. yeah, that's been done too, though i can't recall the name of the project. d --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Sadly, As I own the Cold0play album, I noticed that the writing credits on the track are credited to include kraftwerk as co-writers, and as such, Kraftwerk will be getting their share of publishing royalties. But I dont have my copy of either CD to hand at the moment, so can;t tell you exactly what it says! Sorry If this has already been covered... Well, it is pretty obvious to any owner of Computer World by Kraftwerk that its just been straight nicked (It's the tune from my favourite track, Computer Love). When I first realised it I was really angry... I used to think Coldplay were very good you see, up until their latest album where frankly everything sounds similar. After their single Clocks, everything just seems to be too related. This is the icing on the cake of displeasure. You might wonder why I have any right to be angry. Well, it just irritates me that a band who have only been around for a short while (especially when compared to Kraftwork's legacy) are already using other people's tunes to get Number One chart hits. Bad move I feel. I don't like Coldplay but I know that they use the Kraftwerk riff in Talk like an homage, I read in NME I think, that the vocalist shows the song to Ralf, and Ralf liked a lot the homage for Kraftwerk. And Brian Eno makes all the keyboards of this Coldplay's cd, when the band was recording, Brian came in the studio, hear and like the band and ask if he could do some tunes, and of course they aprove it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, Brian has never properly Come Out about his embarrassing 'habit' (and we see from this that he hasn't kicked it yet)... shooting up stadium-inclined rock with chiming high-end guitars and soaring vocals (cf. U2, James...). He clearly requires 'help'... alan --On 13 February 2006 00:31 -0300 Victor Pardinho <crusherclayman@hotmail.com> wrote:
