Funkstorung In Concert: Disconnected Acoustic Tour 2004 Sponsored by XLR8R Magazine (http://www.xlr8r.com) Riding a tide of essential remixes for everyone from Bjork to the Wu-Tang Clan, as well as pioneering the glitch-hop sound recently popularized by the likes of Prefuse 73 and Dabrye, Funkstörung made their triumphant return this Spring with their first proper long-player in four years. On Disconnected neither pop nor hip-hop, blues nor soul are safe from the duo's metallic grasp as their signature sound evolves and new directions are explored. With an amazing cast of vocalists and their unparalleled production style, Funkstörung's Chris de Luca and Michael Fakesch have created a jilted, electronic pop masterpiece deeply rooted in leftfield electro, smoldering, emotive pop and next-level hip-hop. Funkstörung found 23 year-old vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Enik, in the orchestra pit of the Munich Pathos Theater and were convinced of his talent within seconds. The range of emotions heard both in his voice as well as his songwriting is staggering especially as he jumps from indie rocker to soul singer, depending on the track. In their search for diverse voices, Funkstörung have elevated their own musicianship. "Sleeping Beauty" is a whirring folk ballad with Lou Rhodes of Lamb while "Captured in Tones" is flavored with rock guitar and features Sarah Jay, quite possibly the most memorable voice heard on Massive Attack's Mezzanine album. However, just because they've revealed their love for pop music, the men of Funkstörung have certainly not forsaken their affinity for hip-hop. New York MC Tes, who records for Warp's Lex imprint flows furiously on "Chopping Heads" and "Fat Camp Feva" over Funkstörung's tweaked breaks and rugged bass while Rob Sonic of Sonicsum and Hamburg beatboxer Mark Boombastic also tear up tracks on their own. And now the guys are finally ready to privy American audiences to their otherworldly live performance, bridging the gap between synthetic and organic, laptop computers and live instruments. The Funkstorung live show sees both Chris and Michael on stage manning two laptops, singer/songwriter Enik and bass player, Andreas Kellner. Soulful Acoustics, Hip-hop Electronics and Pop Poetics. Tuesday 6/22 Los Angeles, CA w/eDIT (Planet Mu)- LIVE DJ's TL Smith vs DERU AT The Echo -1822 Sunset Blvd 9-2am 10$ 18+ presale at http://www.ticketweb.com

I don't see what all the hype is about this Funkstorung. I heard a live set on a college radio station the other day......don't get me wrong, it sounded fat, but holy shnykies it got very, very repetitive sounding. Excuse me while I play my Dj Swamp battle records back to back for a few hours. --- Sarah Chambliss <smotor@pacbell.net> wrote:

Most of the hype right now is due to the tour. On top of that, they're one of the originators of the overtly glitched out hiphop sound. Whether you dig it or not, its a popular combination thats bound to get some people excited. The new album is alot more song oriented and has that indierock crossover appeal, although i've only talked to idm kids who were into it. They played in pittsburgh the other night. I thought it was a real good show overall. They had their live vocalists, a bassist and a couple folks manning the laptops. - cutups ----- Original Message ----- From: "JCR665.9" <underachiever420@yahoo.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 5:34 PM Subject: Re: [idm] *FUNKSTORUNG* LIVE IN LOS ANGELES

Last time they played LA (a year or so ago) I was bored to tears. I won't be seeing them this time around. In fact the only way I'd consider paying money to see them again is if they were doing a laptop tour and breaking out all the old techno/glitch like on Appetite... and the 12"s immediately prior to that (Sonderdienste, Funkenstort have some of their best stuff). I don't even mind the heavy hip hop influence, but the rappers just don't do it for me.
