No one will forget Donna Summer, that's for sure. But that's not the only point to make during a show.

True, but I think he didn't have the choice, being the one playing next... Anyways, I try to be open and to think that what he did was done in an artistic way. In the end, a lot of people criticized the ones who changed the music over time, but eventually, the musicians win and this is how music styles appear and evolve. The Mutek festival was again, very entertaining. Who wants to say something about the festival? While I didn't attend much of the shows (2 nights only), I want to say something about the saturday night evening: 1) Donna Summer is a unique character that deserves to play in such a festival, but SURELY not during that particular night. His music is experimental and I am a fan of his earlier releases. Saturday night was the first time that Mutek had an all-night show. To name a few artists on the list: Herbert (DJ), Crackhaus, Rip Off Artist, Isolee. Now I don't know why Donna Summer was inserted directly in the middle of the night. Ok, I admit it, I was the first to cheer when D. Summer came onstage, but wasn't expecting this kind of set: a moutain of distorted samples completely mashed and way to loud & fast, completely killed the crowd (about a third of the crowd left). Oh, and his attitude onstage is quite lamentable. Shouting insults to the crowd, telling everyone he felt like it was Toronto because nobody would react to his tunes (can't thing of anything good to say, at least don't start dissing Toronto people), and then coming back for an unwanted encore (people boo'ed at some point). And I'm pretty sure that Eric Mattson knew that this would happen, but didn't care (was it too hard to include DS the same night Errorsmith played, for instance?). Which brings me to the second point. 2) Eric Mattson is, along with Alain Mongeau (the founder and organizer of Mutek, which I truely admire), the only guy at programming. He has a huge collection of records, and usually a valid opinion about what goes on in the IDM scene. Did a lot for Montreal. But his personal tastes get in conflict with the festival, and I don't think it's the best approach. Having ~just~ 'listened' to 'The Unrelenting Songs of the 1979 Post-Disco Crash' for the first time ever, I'm sure that I wouldn't have even bothered to attend that 'performance'. Have you ever been to a rock concert? A guy who has the balls to come out on stage and full on give'er wearing a white blazer over a Black fucking Sabbath t-shirt has every right to dish it out. Here are a few things to chew on... a) the crowd was divided, but it wasn't apathetic... people loved it or hated it - but they all reacted. b) Saturday night was an ideal slot for JF/DS. His sound is exactly the sort of kick in the pants that a lot of people need (would have been better if he'd caught them in the ass instead of the gonads, but... whatever) - and the reaction demonstrated how relunctant some people are to getting what they need. There were no in-out privileges on Saturday night. If people wanted to catch Rip-Off Artist, Crackhaus and Herbert - then they had to endure. Leaving and coming back wasn't an option. c) The observations regarding people milling around by the bar or sitting down on the balcony. Those were spot on. I was talking with some friends from western Canada who said they were going up to the balcony to find a seat and I didn't understand it? They came halfway across the country so they could party sitting down? Loosen your turtlenecks, kids... it's ain't a damned John Tesh show. d) Part of being provocative is provoking people. You can quote me on that. Jason Forrest did it about as well as I've seen anyone do it since the MEAT performances ended.

Considering that Errorsmith played on Saturday afternoon - DS *did* play the same night as Errorsmith. Unless your referring to Errorsmith's performance with Soundhack on Wednesday, and I really don't think he fit with what was going on that night. I mean, I can't really see how things work better with JF/DS alongside Vitamins For You and Junior Boys. Moving him to Sunday night would have made some sense, too... but people would have died if he had been part of the same line-up as Jamie Lidell (for those who don't know - Lidell absolutely annihilated people last night).

blah...blah...blah... if he 'usually has a valid opinion' then why don't you trust his judgement instead of second-guessing him? Is your record collection huger than his?

It hardly seemed like a private show.
