when i saw him in chicago at the warp nesh thing all he had was a laptop (or at least that's all i could see) and he rocked the house. i've never seen a whole venue begin dancing the second the first sound comes out of the speakers like that. instant success. when i saw him a few months ago in SF with four tet, i seriously left a little while after four tet went off. he had a live drummer and some other mates on the stage with him, and it sounded like poo from where i was sitting. not that having a band is bad - the drummer himself actually sounded pretty good, its just that (in order of cause and effect) #1 it did not sound like a cohesive whole and #2 it didnt sound like prefuse73 and #3 i couldnt dance to it. i own uprock and 92v02, and didnt buy one word because of that show. i'd love to hear people's opinions of that album - should i give it a second chance or stick with my intuition? did he use that "band" (translation - fiasco) to make that album? greg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

No. When he was in Baltimore it was for that album and he did it all on stage with his laptop, mpc, and moog voyager (and maybe another bit or two, don't remember). No drummer or any other live musician, outside of a DJ that no one could hear (maybe he was doing some of the in-between-song stuff? don't know). anyway, the album is pretty solid, and there are some memorable tracks. There's not such as great a fusion of rap and his own stuff as there was on uprock, but I feel the album is a bit more cohesive -- I'll usually listen to it all the way through, instead of skipping around and only hearing half of uprock. -- eggytoast.com : eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

it's great when you hear the artist actually twist the tracks a bit, isn't it. I hear he's touring Savath this year and that should be interesting as it's going to be a whole band then. What I love most about his stuff besides the glitchy beats is the jazzy vibes and the fact that it really lends itself to improvisation (that's the feeling I get listening to it) Cheers, roland --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It was a really good show. He headlined and Beans opened for him. I think it actually worked really well, because they were similar yet wholly different performances. -- eggytoast.com -- eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I can see how that could be criticism (however fairly put), but I think it's one of the strengths of Scott Herren's output. His output is varied between the various names but it's consistent within those names. Personally, I'm saddened that he's retired the Delasora and Asora stuff, as those are some of my favorite albums (backsome especially). It's nice to see that he's got a lot of variety of output, even if it's not all my cup o' tea. derek -- eggytoast.com -- eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I actually found myself liking it --- liking it quite a lot in fact. It is a new road he is trying out. Based on his musical inventiveness and rythmic skill -- he is allowing his art to be expressed in a new way. BTW: Wire Magazine review quote: "There is no fake authenticity in this musical exploration, and Herren's musical palette is impressively wide ranging..... Impossible to pigeonhole, on first listen "Apropra't" is almost casual in its effortless brilliance. Yet there's something really substantial at its core." --- EggyToast <eggy@eggtastic.com> wrote:

I think I might like Apropa't better if it didn't just sound so much like Stereolab with Spanish lyrics. I mean, yeah, it's technically good, and very well produced, but it's just a little boring to me. Maybe I just haven't been in the right headspace when I've been listening. Driving to work with it at 7:00AM probably isn't the best environment to really appreciate it. That said, I really love Track 8, Um Girassol, etc... That one really sticks out. Very pop. Patrick, that's interesting - so he actually played with a band (bass/drums...)? I 've listened to a couple of Dabrye tracks recently and must say I really like them. Have no idea where to get his music in Germany though. I think that Vocal Studies is by far the better Prefuse release compared with Extinguisher. Shame I only got it on Bleep and don't have the cover - I love cover artwork! Cheers, R.
