I don't know about 'experienced composer' but i've been making music out of
samples & sounds from old records on my mac laptop for a few years now, and
I've worked out a decent system for getting the job done...
reason is a good program, but it has its problems - limited effects, cluttered
interface, and the tendency to sound rather flat. The problem with the
flatness, i've noticed, can be fixed by individually exporting each audio track
from reason and mixing them down in another program. for some strange reason,
reason (no pun intended) does a terrible job when you try to export a whole
project as a single audio track - if you've set up send effects on the mixer
that affect more than one track (like, for instance, running compression on two
drum kits from the same effects unit) then the degradation is a bit worse - it
sounds a million times better if the tracks are exported individually - when
you do this it's also important to use the mute button (not the solo) to block
out tracks, because you may lose your effects by using the solo button.
since I don't actually play any instruments, I usually cut up the sounds I want
to use in Recycle, then arrange the samples in Reason (I really like the rex
sequencer). As I build each few bars of the song, I export loops, then arrange
the loops in ableton live, which sounds better as a whole and lets you use vst
effects, time-stretching & whatnot. When I've got the song sounding exactly how
I want it to, I export the individual tracks and mix them down in another
program. Right now I use cubase, but i'd rather use something like Deck if I
could get a working copy for osx.
It's also important to have a good sound editor (I use Peak G4+) so you can
edit the tracks exported from reason and make them sound better, normalize,
remove noise or whatever.
of course, if I was a real pro, i'd just do the whole thing in logic or cubase,
but, uh, i don't know how - those programs kind of confuse me.
hope this is helpful
