Speaking of The Cure, I have a question re: hp (hewlett packard's) new $300 million advertising campaign. The Cure's "Pictures Of You" is being used to score this campaign (there's at least $50 000 to Robert Smith et al--congrats; great to see that hp didn't go with something like Moby; anyway, I'm digressing...). The first two times I saw this commercial, it was an excerpt from The Cure's "Pictures Of You" used, but *every time since*, it has been a soundalike cover version instead ie someone who sounds sorta like Robert Smith and music that sounds like the original. So, a) did The Cure change their mind a few weeks into the campaign and get hp to use a soundalike cover instead of their original track (incidentally, this would drop The Cure's payday to about $25 000) or b) did hp have a change of heart (too much emotion in Robert Smith's delivery? :) and decide to switch to a soundalike cover version a few weeks into the campaign, or c) was this the way the campaign was actually planned from the start ie use the actual Cure song for the first few weeks of the campaign and then when you've built in recognition and branding ("hey, that's The Cure's 'Pictures Of You'; "hey, hp must be cool because they used The Cure in one of their campaigns") switch to the soundalike cover. Anyone in the advertising industry on this list have a bit of inside info? Thanks in advance. i saw that commercial on thanksgiving. it sounded like the "single" or "video" mix, which makes robert's voice very loud and dry and the music plodding, removing all the bells and guitar and synth overdubs. they also only used the end part where his voice is low, which is very unlike robert's usual strangled yelp. it almost sounds like a demo or a bad cover, but i think it's really them. unless it's changed since then. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Since you guys brought up The Cure, I thought I would mention that Paul Mac remixed "Pictures Of You" for the One Perfect Day soundtrack. Paul Mac usually makes either minimal techno or really lush Detroit style techno. If you haven't heard his album "Old School Former Pupil" it's definitely worth tracking down!! Orbital & Lisa Gerrard also collaborate on one track, "Sunrise" for that soundtrack. I'm sure that will be interesting. --- chthonic streams <chthonic@chthonicstreams.com> wrote:
