I'm curious about what other people think of this site, I went there a couple of weeks ago and there was a splash page saying that they were shut down but they were up today. I'm not a fan of this site at all, I've found that their writing leaves me cold and that their obvious anti-american outlook leaves me angry. They always come off as really bitter and I can never read anything on there without thinking that they hate everything but they always find a way to kiss up to the artist or label somewhere in the review so that (I guess) they can continue getting promos or something. my 2 p jess --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? ???????? why visit the site if you don't like it? maybe you should start a petition to have it closed again? [idm-bit]: i'm really enjoying the Victor Gama - Pangeia Instrumentos album on rephlex that was out this week. not an synth in sight but still definitely a rephlex release. really varied sounds and nice loops. at a push, maybe it's Boc unplugged. kyf Friday, October 24, 2003, 6:44:24 PM, you wrote: JS> I'm curious about what other people think of this site, I went there a couple of weeks ago and there was a splash page saying that they were shut down but they were up today. I'm a fan of the site. I don't really read into their political issues, basically just go for their reviews. I like to order whatever ep of the issue they have without reading the review, its a nice surprise with each order. I much prefer their style of reviewing over the longwinded pitchfork reviews. I find that they listen to a good variety of electronic music which is nice. On Fri, 24 Oct 2003, Jessica S wrote:

On a general note, if criticism of America leaves you angry I suggest you not explore any literature to the left of Newsweek or virtually all independent publications, let alone most foreign press. (foreign outside of America, that is...I'm not sure where absorb is located) But I didn't find anything of that nature on absorb. Just, uh, music reviews and information. Maybe I just didn't read enough... In terms of the general coldness of their writing, I suppose I get that a little, but nothing more than I would expect from a publication largely based on criticism. I would not characterize it as "cold". They always

I didn't find that at all. I mean, I read some pretty nasty reviews, but in most cases they were right on in their criticism. The electronic music composer 7" (planet-mu) review is something I take issue with and at times they do seem to be a bit childish, but the amount of information contained and number of positive reviews, or justified negative ones, far outweighs these exceptions. Most of the criticism I can at least understand if not agree with. It is a resource I'll be spending more time with - funny how few people mentioned it prior to it being down. That was what reminded me and sent me back. ov. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! I concur. The remind me of 'the critic' but mince words to make their bitter distaste for all music less apparent. I have read some good (as in positive) reviews by absorb but when push comes to shove I'd rather read CMJ. I wish they had a CMJ strictly for BPM though :( |---<grant>---[KIDD] -----Original Message----- From: Jessica S [mailto:js_modernist@yahoo.com] Sent: Friday, October 24, 2003 10:44 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] absorb.org I'm curious about what other people think of this site, I went there a couple of weeks ago and there was a splash page saying that they were shut down but they were up today. hello just to add to the discussion regarding absorb.org, i think its pretty unbelievable that people are dissing it because they've given some releases bad reviews. idm music 'reviewing' pretty much consists of mutual back slapping, with no dissenting voices allowed. in almost no other musical subculture is it highly highly unusual to read even a mildly critical piece....i think absorb should be applauded for pointing out the emperor's nudity. and for god's sake, that Electronic Music Composer review was hardly the hatchet job it seems to be being made out to be. ______________________________________________________________________ thevillageorchestra/the marcia blaine school for girls/accrual Marcia Blaine Industries : http://marciablaine.cjb.net Out Now: "Pine Trees Make Golden Rules"(Stuff Records01 comp.12") "Pink Sticks / We" (Static Caravan 7") "Kamara Debagging" (Awkward Silence split 7") Forthcoming: "Miss Prism" (Static Caravan vs Expanding 10" comp.) I can't speak for others, but I pointed out the emc review as a sort of "devil's advocate" counterargument to my underline point of the resource *not* being the hotbed of arrogance and bitterness it was made out to be by the poster of the original message. In other words, the emc was the *worst* I found in terms of what I personally felt was an unfair review, and I agree, it *wasn't* all that bad. Thus, absorb isn't a bad place. If the context wasn't as clear, I apologize. ov.
