so i've really been enjoying the new a rocket in dub cd, especially track 5 -- i just love that muted sort of drunken sounding trumpet. anyway, what i'm wondering is how the rocket in dub stuff compares with the rest of the italic label catalogue? it seems that much of the label catalogue is by Stefan Schwander under different aliases. how do they compare to a rocket in dub? also, if you know of any other artists similar to a rocket in dub that i might enjoy, i'd love to hear about 'em. more generally, i should probably say that i love most of the releases on Force Tracks, i love the more groovy, less hard side of Kompakt (and the ambient stuff) and i like the stuff i've picked up on Trapez and most of the stuff (which is less in total) that i've picked up on Traum. thanks for your suggestions. dave --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? 5 i will agree that 'rocket no. 5' is quite unique with that trumpet bit; can't say i've heard anything like that from a minimal/dub techno track. but for my money, i prefer 'rocket no. 4' ...a very nice groove there...reminds me a lot of scsi-9. having said that, i think -- overall -- the rocket in dub sound falls closest to scsi-9 in terms of the playful dub melodies over the tight bassline formula. but scsi-9's stuff on force tracks, especially, are more user/club friendly than any of the rocket in dub material.

catalogue? i'm no italic expert, but here are my 2 pesos... as you pointed out, about half of the catalogue is, indeed, produced by mr schwander. his other main project, antonelli electr., veers more toward the experimental, micro/clicks'n'cuts style...but still keeping somewhat of a 4-4 clickhouse beat to it. one element i find common to all his material is the playfulness of his melodies and willingness to throw something a little different at the listener...at unexpected times. i'm sure you hear this on the rocket cd, in addition to 'rocket 5'. i'm not sure why, but i find a slight slight element of lounge to his music. so if that floats your boat, seek out the antonelli electr. stuff. aside from schwander, the other italic release i would recommend without reservation is the sustainer lp, 'cuántico' (italic 030, 1993) -- made by some bloke from spain. if you have any leaning whatsoever to the classic basic channel/maurizio/chain reaction order of things, then you should give this one a whirl asap. it's a little tigher (less atmospheric/less flowing and more steppy/housy) than the standard "13 minute epic" format of maurizio, but it's still very good and works well with other tracks in a mix.

might enjoy well, if you've been through trapez/traum/force tracks, then you know all about scsi-9 (i would hope). if you're after more 4-4 dub-style stuff, check these: dub taylor: forms & fugures (raum) dub taylor: shoptalk (morris/audio) scsi-9: from cover to cover (morris/audio) qads: muchacho (raum) michael langlois: untitled (raum) gustavo lamas on onitor jirku/judge on onitor otherwise, for a less 4-4 approach, try echocord; mikkel metal is The man. i look forward to other comments on this. asg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Interesting comments - the only Italic release I have is something a friend gave me quite recently called DANCER - the Italic Collection Volume 1, dated 2002. I had never heard of this label before and checked on the net; found out that it was "initiated by Marc Knauer in 1999". How does that fit in with the '93 release mentioned above? The album I've got here has the following t/listing (taken from AMG): 1. Composure performed by Antonelli Electr - 5:41 2. Rocket No. 3 performed by Rocket in Dub - 7:24 3. Wiedersehen performed by Borneo & Sporenburg - 4:35 4. Pannini performed by Soda - 5:05 5. The Vogue performed by Antonelli Electr / Miss Kittin - 4:39 6. Rocket No. 0 performed by Rocket in Dub - 7:53 7. Somewhere in Metropolis performed by Borneo & Sporenburg - 4:37 8. Sounds Like performed by Soda - 7:45 9. Nachtclub Pavement performed by Antonelli Electr - 6:37 10. Rocket No. 2 performed by Rocket in Dub - 8:20 11. Gold performed by Borneo & Sporenburg - 5:59 12. Motorcity performed by Soda - 6:32 My favourite track on here is the Borneo & Sporenburg #7. But it's all in all recommended if you like 'that kind of sound'. Stefan Schwander: aka: Swimmingpool (w/Michael Scheibenreiter, out of Phoneheads) 'anything that doesn't move' 2002 Combination Records, "part of the Carhartt network". If you're enjoying 'Rocket in Dub', you ~love~ Swimmingpool. ~Very~ dub. Pick that one up, for sure. aka: Repeat Orchestra - Themes From Repeat (aTouchofClass) Not as dubby as Swimmingpool; more along the lines of the Antonelli Electr. stuff that Schwander does, though Repeat Orchestra is less pop-y than Electr. Of the Antonelli Electr. releases on Italic, my favourite is 'Me, the Disco Machine': great stuff! Very disco, very machine-minimal. 'Click' is also worth picking up. 'Love and Other Solutions', the most recent Electr. release, did not impress me as much as the first two Electrs. It's not bad, though, just not outstanding, as is 'Me, the Disco Machine': that one raised the bar. ;) Of all that stuff, Swimmingpool will be your best 'fit', IMO. You might check out the Oni.Tor label, distributed by Kompakt, for other stuff that will interest. In particular, the Judge/Jirku album, Plusism, and the compilation album, 'Von Uns'. On that comp, the Solovyev track, Roct, should ~work~ for you, considering your impression of Rocket in Dub: they're two mixes of that one on it, both dubbed out nicely. The Hagedorn album on Oni.Tor is worth a listen, too. My advice on Schwander: if he's involved, grab it! =seek= --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

it doesn't! haha. sorry folks, that was decade-delayed type-O. italic 30 came out a couple months ago...2003! perhaps i had the early 90s basic channel business on the brain... asg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
