[22/04/03] [Now available]: SET FIRE TO FLAMES ‘Telegraphs In Negative / Mouths Trapped In Static’ 2xCD (CD13-03) This record is being released in North America by Alien8 (www.alien8recordings.com) and in Japan by P-Vine (www.p-vine.com). The vinyl on this release is currently held up in production, but should be available in the next 2 or 3 weeks. ‘Two full-length albums in one from the 13-piece Montreal collective SFTF, whose desolate but uplifting, existentially expressive yet emotionally resonant, plain bloody beautiful pieces stretch the idea of modern classicism as far as it will go. The LPs were recorded, by both individual members and collectively, in an abandoned barn in rural Ontario and the place has seeped into every tape loop, drone, drum and saw, every violin, vocal, guitar and bird song. Too much to take in in one sitting, this is a remarkable work by a truly extraordinary talent…’ [Time Out] ‘SFTF variously employ sleep deprivation, creative isolation, implied substance abuse and other cultish behaviour in the quest for musical purity and truth… But where Godspeed are all apocalyptic crescendos, SFTF are almost an inversion of their sister band. This second release is a mammoth double album. CD1 entails a creepy, paranoid and altogether more frightening less-is-more evocation of the power of interference and silence. CD2 is more ‘there’ in its improv spareness, but the music transmits a bereft, grieving loneliness that is quite overwhelming. An astonishing work.’ [X-Ray] ‘… set fire to flames' "telegraphs..." is the newest, and perhaps bravest, utterance from a scene with an uncompromising desire to evolve… their improvisational approach creates a continuously shifting musical landscape in which delicate cello or droning guitar gives way to the sound of creaking wood, birdsong, or the heavy shuffle of human activity. The album was recorded in a collapsing barn on an abandoned farm in rural ontario during a five day session of improvisation and field recording and the image of broken down architecture is perhaps the best metaphor for this album. Radiant, shimmering guitar harmonies are allotted the same stature as grainy static drones, as haunting solo viola or strange, intercepted radio monologues. The overall sound is almost impossible to pin down. You feel as if you are listening to the making of the music, the time and place in which it happened, as much as the sound itself. Listeners keen to experience the elated orchestrations of early! Godspeed will be satisfied here... the music is simply stunning, its sparsity creating a sense of delicate creation, of 13 people's fragile attempt at communicating something tangible and beautiful through waves of static.’ [Absorb.com] ‘Recorded under strict self discipline, chemically fuelled to excess they freely deliver pure expressionist music. Free of genre-binding suffocations / instead emoting hate and love through the use of fading electrically powered musical instruments, found sound and a magical touch that David Lynch should grab onto for his next nightmarish trip to the darkest recesses of the human psych. Set Fire blaze through a much wider array of colours and shadings. Superb music.’ [Boomkat.com] [MAY RELEASES] 12/05 Sigur Rós ‘Untitled 1’ 10” / 3” CD / DVD+CD 10FAT02 / CD10FAT02 / DVD10FAT02 12/05 Party Of One ‘Caught The Blast’ CD / LP FATCD27 / FATLP27 [LIVE EVENTS] SYLVAIN CHAUVEAU 24/04 Nancy, Mjc Pichon 25/04 Montreuil, Les Instants Chavirés -- To disconnect from: [fatcat data posting], just follow this link: http://www.fat-cat.co.uk/cgi-bin-local/mojo/mojo.cgi?f=u&l=[fatcat_data_post ing]&e=pietrobot@digitalnimbus.com&p=9277 Click the link, or copy and paste the address into your browser. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
