Hello f(r)iends, I know that this has little to do with IDM, but if everyone else can post their sales, I can too. :-P My local Wherehouse is going out of business, and they have twenty-one copies of Prince's 4-CD boxed set "Crystal Ball" on sale for super-cheap. If anyone wants me to pick one up and mail it to them, I can do so for ten bucks postage paid. E-mail me off-list if you're interested. prolly about as hard as it is to get IDM artists to get their recorded rap / singing vocalists on stage with them for 'shows' man, the plaid / prefuse 73 / a. weatherall show had some really great production, but really poor stage presence... admitted i was a bit drunk and it came at the end of a shitty day, but when i pay $20 for a show, i want some entertainment, dammit! last 2 shows i saw at bimbo's were (admittedly long ago...2+ years?): 1) femi kutti - oh dude, that was awsome... 2) cold cut - now that's a laptop show! i understand that laptop shows often resemble dj sets more than performances (with a much higher level of mixing and selection, given) - perhaps the venue should reflect this? who knows... so, to create some crossover - how about some s-video out guys? i mean, with external instruments, the audience can at least get some idea of the artists interaction with their media. this would give you a similar presence? np: Elliott Smith - I Didn't Understand (via rusty's somafm.com - good enough to excuse the occasional house track that makes it's way to the clickhop stream ;^)) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Definitely. I"m a big supporter of venues that are actually suited for performances, instead of a large space with a booze and music license. The problem is that no one's really used to a non-performing performer yet. If they're not billed as DJ's, the venue is set up like a "rock" show, with overcrowding, nowhere to sit, and everyone looking right at the stage. If it's set up like a DJ thing, the artists are given minimal billing, and the fans are overwhelmed by meat-marketeers and extremely loud (and poor) PAs. So much of IDM would do great if, you know, there was a place to sit down. Dinner music? Dinner theater has all but disappeared for all but those with deep wallets, and I'd imagine such a venue for music would be similarly difficult to maintain for mass appeal. Still, I'd really love it if more coffee houses, diners, and other places where people already meet up introduce live music. As anyone who listens to IDM will tell you, it also works fantastically as background music and doesn't need to be blasting everyone across the street. I go to listen, but why listen when the environments suck?

Yeah, but these guys are sound artists, not video artists. They could spend a ton of money making sure they have extra laptops and buy programs that will do what they want, let alone find a way of getting video into the thing (outside of just downloading commercial stuff). I like having something to do at shows, and visuals are neat, but I can't expect it of a musician. Not to mention having a projector... Plus if you get too elaborate, you draw the ire of indie poseurs who just show up to sneer at everything :D derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ catchy signature coming soon --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah. ironic, isn't it? The genre's so big that no matter what you say, it's going to cause an argument (not a pissing fight, but rather have people with a lot of differing views saying drastically different things). I mean, any list where you have fans of Venetian Snares stuck up against fans of Boards of Canada next to people who still dig on old Orb and AI style "techno" is either going to be a slingfest or lacking in traffic. That said, I finally picked up the older Prefuse 73 album, Chris Clark's album, Casino vs. Japan's "Go Hawaii," and the Brothomstate's "Qtio" EP. Mixed reviews coming soon :) derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

See, i picked it up on the strength of the recent reviews on the list, saying "oh, claro isn't very good but Qtio is really good, it's not biting autechre at all!" and, well, yeah -- autechre generally keep an overall feeling going for a song, instead of messing it up so you can't get into it. Maybe i'm just stupid but there's a fine line between 'controlled chaotic patterns' and 'let's fuck this up' there were good parts, but it reminded me too much of the recent smak compilation stuff -- too much "let's fuck this up", not enough composition. derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ catchy signature coming soon --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

now, see, thats odd how differently we react. i'm not a proponent of dsp-fuckery for dsp-fuckery's sake, but i do love some seriously irritating shit like ae/mike pardinas/tom jenkenson but only really when they creates an emotional space/progression with their fuckery. for instance, i just can't stand kid606 and his pals, their tunes just feel like joe satriani with a laptop oif you know what i mean. whereas my limited experience with brothemstates (the track's jak got stuck, qtio, adozenaday in particular) really moved me, much more so than 99% of this sub-genre has done for years. speaking of, i'm still more wowed by ae with every release, they manage to keep going at their own speed pushing their sound ahead... maybe they dont utterly change their sound with every release like some people seem to want, but innovation does not nessesarily mean tearing down the past. personally i'm very impressed by how they have managed to mix consistancey and progression across a whole decade while remaining pertinent, very very few artists ever achieve this. i really dont think any other artist has managed to continue to hold my attention for so long. -- ____________________________________________________ independent u.s. drum'n'bass -- http://vitriolix.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I picked up one of each.... The round clear set and the square set. But be sure to listen to them first! Some of the discs in some of the sets are not prince! It was a pressing error. Anyway, it's an amazing deal. Also check out the used, I got Severed Heads, Steve Stoll, P-orridge "A Hollow Cost" and "Cold Dark Matter", Karen Finley, Negativeland and a bunch of cool weird stuff for .99 cents each! hex

recommend it? It's a compilation of old remixes. hardly an offering. A fair chunk of teh remixes were even edited down so they're shorter. nothing any big fan of rdj from the late 90's didn't already download. derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ catchy signature coming soon --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well I've heard almost all the remixes on the CD, and they're good. Some better than others. Drukqs, for all it's occasional charm, sounds a bit like a trip to the big shoebox 'o dats to come up with enough stuff to finish out his contract with Warp. Anyway, I'm way more excited by Ghostly International's "Idol Tryouts V 1" CD coming out in May. Wicked good tracks from Tadd Mullinix, Matthew Dear, Dykehouse, Midwest Product, and others. The Dykehouse track -- a Wire cover -- is completely unlike what you'd expect if you have "Dynamic Obsolescence." On Mon, 31 Mar 2003, Richard wrote:

fuckery. I'm the same way, for the most part. It's no fun just hearing someone run through some plugins (and as someone who has fun making music, I tend to hear specific effects a bit more (at least, more than I used to)), but it's cool when you don't notice the tricks and it all just gels together.

I definitely felt that Qtio was a step above the DSP for DSP's sake, but compared to the stuff I had heard of his earlier, it sounded like he was trying to branch out into new territory but wasn't entirely sure where he was headed. That can lead to cool stuff sometimes, but it can also sound meandery. I expect EPs to be a little less fluid than albums (oddly enough, considering one's smaller and should be easier to keep a solid concept with compared to the other), but Qtio was all over the map. The first half of the first track was cool, and he was doing some cool stuff, but he never let the track pick up speed on its own. I always felt him lording over it, fiddling with it in an attempt to make it do tricks and play with the listener, instead of letting it run around and play. He does it elsewhere on teh EP, too. That's one of the things that I've always liked about Autechre tracks, and other artists that are in the realm of more "abstract" idm -- they make tracks seem to 'come alive' instead of just putting some sounds together. Compare Gantz Graf, which has a ton of weird stuff seemingly shoved into it but it doesn't sound like two blokes fiddling with a computer -- it sounds like a piece of music, fully realized, and it follows a progression that really fits with itself. There were certainly good tracks on Qtio, but for most of it there was definitely a presence of some guy with his hand in the middle of the tracks, throwing stuff around to see what sticks. Sometime stuff stuck and it was great, but there were plenty of times where something hit the wall, slid to the floor, and left a big slimetrail on its way down, too.

Same here. It's weird thinking of each release as an autechre release in anything more than simple namesake. They all *fit*, sure, but the way most artists work, the sound stays similar and if they do something drastically different, they come up with a new name for themselves and try to fit the image around that. Autechre have simply been pushing their own envelope and you can always tell its them, despite each album sounding like an entity on its own. I certainly have favorites, mind, but I've always found it amazing how they're able to do such different things consecutively and do them so well. They've never made their tracks sound drowned in technology -- they've always given them ample breathing room -- which I think really helps. derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ catchy signature coming soon --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
