that's odd that you say that.. i really didn't hear claro as light,
poppy melodic idm.. i heard it as quite heavy, sometimes spacey, at
times verging upon pedantic (similar to some ae releases). definitely
melodic, though. certainly his melodies can be light in the right
context, but his beats are heavy stuff. i heard claro as mostly a
close cousin of something that autechre would put out with a bit more
melody in it, which, imo, is a department in which many (notable
exceptions (krib, clipper, eutow, maphive, go sumo) excluded) of their
tracks don't pay enough attention to.
i haven't listened to claro as much as i have qtio and other net
releases of his, because frankly i don't think it's as good. bstates
definitely has a lighter side to him, but i don't think it's to be
found on claro, except perhaps with 'mdrmx'. i think qtio (of his warp
releases) is a much better introduction, but honestly, i think some of
his best material is found elsewhere, like his ep on exogenic, and the
track he did for the pc demos "codename chinadoll" and "the nonstop
ibiza experience".. you can grab those on www.scene.org if you're so
inclined... codename chinadoll has an mp3 soundtrack, and ibiza has a
.xm soundtrack (winamp probably plays it ok). i think this material
better shows why the man is on warp. and damn, man, that
defaultresponse set! but i'll shut my cake-hole about that now, so i
don't come off as maybe just a little too into it.
one of the things i like about brothomstates is that he's not afraid to
let the booty-bass drop. which he does quite frequently. i think it's a
really great match to his sound.. a lot of this kind of idm gets really
intellectual and chin-scratchy and whatever. not intending to kick off
another "wtf does idm mean, really now?" type discussion, but he's
definitely aware there's a d in idm.
rather interesting, remember hallucinogen? simon posford,
goa/psytrance, yadda yadda? brothomstates has some material coming out
on his label, one of them a hallucinogen cover :P
ok, that's all for now.
