The same could be said about public transportation, airplanes, taxis, carpools, military transportation, etc...though the weight of your argument/commentary holds no water. It's an assumed risk you take when you embark on these sorts of things, whether it be international travel, a trip across town or even (gasp) a trip into the 'final frontier'. -daniel -----Original Message----- From: iteration zero [mailto:iterationzero@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, February 27, 2003 8:59 AM To: untitledartist@hotmail.com; IDM@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] What is the deal with Nasa? (that subject line was in the Seinfeld style, sorry) I was just wondering why if I killed a bunch of people and blew three major multi million dollar projects in the last 20 years (1 the Chalenger disaster, 2 the martian probe disaster, 3 the other disaster they're still cleaning up wreckage from) I wouldn't have a job...and Nasa still exists sending people to a dangerous vacuum in 70's spacecrafts. Seems like they should've taken those celebrities up, and used that cash for some new atmosphere jumpers (my derogatory term for the waste baskets that can't even get to a neighboring planet.) Doesn't anybody else pine for the 2001 we were supposed to have..or do Americans think we "won " when (if) we got to the moon? Sorry this post is off topic I needed to rant Patrick _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. I guess from a certain perspective that's true, but don't forget, without NASA and space travel, our electronic music scene would be profoundly different. Think of "spacelab," "space is the place," Red Planet, most of Detroit electro for that matter....Not that America's organization alone influenced electronica's foundations, but we definitely have to be thankful NASA was around to influence that generation of kids. Isn't there anything else positive about NASA? Oh yeah, we shouldn't forget about scientific discovery and exploration of our universe.... Three major disasters out of how many non-disasters? Don't start ranting about something that doesn't require a rant.... ben __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Along with generally agreeing on the other posts replying to this "rant", I'd like to add that space travel, or any kind of travel for that matter, is a calculated risk. NASA does not try and delude astronauts into thinking this is a safe venture and that it's 100% guaranteed they will return safe and sound. How many manned spaceflights has NASA launched? They've lost three. Given the number of things that can go catastrophically wrong on take-of, in space and on re-entry, I think that's not an outlandish number. I'm not saying that heads shouldn't roll at NASA over this if it was human error that caused the latest crash and I'm not saying that the shuttle program as it stands now isn't a joke. I'm just suggesting to look at the bigger picture. i0 _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. NASA put on a 1993 tour, with Aphex, Orbital, Vapourspace and some-other-guy-who-really-sucked-big-time. It was Moby, he was the headliner. It was his jesus-christ-pose-stand-on-the-keyboard-phase. (Maybe you're just pretending to forget?) Aphex made the biggest impression on me then, but I didn't run out and buy any albums as a result of that show. Later, me and my mate became first, serious Orbital fans, then Aphex, but only SAW I. After SAW I, I was the only one amongst my mates who followd the Twin. Ugh: you just ~had~ to say the name. ;) He also played guitar: wow: he really rocked out. Not. Aphex was *stupendous*! At all of the shows on the tour. Mescalinum United Remix: unforgettable! Shrrrrrreddddddd! Orbital were excellent on that tour, too. Vapourspace was competent, but not stand-out. The djs sucked on that tour, for-the-most-part: really bad: another failure for NASA. ;) Um, SAW1 was released well before that tour: that record had been out for months, at the time of the NASA 'see the light' tour. =seek= --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Whether or not the rant was justified, THIS is a good point. Exactly how old was that most recent space shuttle? I believe it was the first space shuttle in orbit - in 1981. I don't know about you, but I'd be pretty damn careful about sending people up into space in 20-plus-year-old bits of metal. My car's about that old, and I would be nervous about using it for a cross-country road trip... ...And before anyone pounces on me, yes - I'm sure NASA were very careful in terms of checking the craft out, upgrading, repairs, etc, but they obviously weren't careful enough. *shrug* Oh well. At least it has lead to a resurgence of shuttle jokes. Mostly ones recycled from last time, but still... What does NASA stand for: Need Another Seven Astronauts. ;) -- kjf ________________________________________________________________ Get your own evilemail.com address at http://www.evilemail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
