i'll be the eightieth person to mention the words namedrop. the first band that i ever identified with was nirvana, like many of you, i'm sure... though strangely no one has mentioned it. i can't listen to them anymore though because i don't like that kind of nostalgia... it had its time and its place but there's too much baggage and sad feelings and all that rot. from there i found sonic youth and i kind of worked the no wave vein a bit and then figured out what they were influenced by so i got some can and neu and faust and some 70's punk and glam stuff... then i got into dub from the clash album sandinista... mixed in with all this stuff were things like bjork, talking heads, my bloody valentine, sun ra, alice coltrane, pavement, pixies, lots and lots of indie rock, and some abstract jazz here and there... i've still got much love for some of the west coast chronic-era hip hop i loved back then... i think it's way too hard to encapsulate all the music that you loved into one email, let alone remember it. the most important albums i've ever owned: bjork- homogenic arvo part- tabula rasa radiohead- ok computer my bloody valentine- loveless alice coltrane- ptah and the el daoud cat power- moon pix tortoise- millions now living... can- future days sonic youth- confusion is sex and if it hadn't come out so recently that i couldn't be sure, i'd add dntel- life is full of possibilities to the list... ask me in 2 years... hopefully i'll say the same thing. i've been off and on into electronic music since i read a review for afx's SAWII... i bought it but didn't really /get/ it for a while... then i bought LP5 from autechre, loved it. mostly though i like melodic glitchy stuff now or scratchy hazy noisy stuff like fennesz. also, i got into mouse on mars from being a stereolab fan... i still listen to all kinds of stuff... in fact, since my roommates don't really care for electronic music, and i put them through a lot when i'm making music, i tend to listen to a lot of jazz and indie stuff 'round the house. gregory ===== )the fawn )"i thought when i started playing )shows i'd meet a lot of really cool )people, but most of the people i've )met just want me to copy software )for them" __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? quoted 1 line autechre - tri repitae++>autechre - tri repitae++
i guess i haven't heard much autechre. the first thing i ever got jophn peel 2 and then i bought confield when it came out, then LP7 then incunabula for a birthday. i haven't heard really anything of the other autechre and gescom material. i just want to know if with the material i've got, i've kind of seen what the shallow end is like and the deep end is like so what's the area inbetween like (amber etc).
quoted 1 line bjork - vespertine>bjork - vespertine
this album is great and in a way, it kind of introduced me to the term glitch and minimalist techno after i'd found out a little bit aboout matmos. wanting to find more about glitch i think i found system by oval,(partly because afx had said they had used some of his ambient stuff for their material). bjork kind of introduced me to techno/whatever with soul
quoted 1 line portishead - portishead>portishead - portishead
this is one of my favourite albums ever, it's just a powerfull album and the nyc album is great too. i remember getting it for christmas when i was 14/15, and my parents thought i was suicidal(no really)
quoted 1 line radiohead - ok computer>radiohead - ok computer
never really liked radiohead when this came out, but i liked a few things by them and after hearing exit music on romeo and juliet i bought this album and got coonverted overnight. went to see them on the tent tour as well, the day kid A came out. i suppose i can kind of blame radiohead for me getting into more idmish type music, although they cant touch the stuff i listen to these days.
quoted 1 line aphex twin - come to daddy>aphex twin - come to daddy
fantastic. another ebtry into idm/drill n bass/electronica/whatever
quoted 1 line photek - modus operandi>photek - modus operandi
photek helped me get into the whole idea of beat science when i was 14 i've been hooked on finding progressively more complex beats and structures ever since.
quoted 1 line bjork - homogenic>bjork - homogenic
great album, discovered it after vespertine, apart from seeing allis full of love on mtv.
quoted 1 line skinny puppy - the process>skinny puppy - the process
i remember a skinny puppy album off a mate who was into industrial and metal stuff once. it was the remix album, not sure if the above is it but teh autechre remix was the first i ever heard of them. the fact that they had done this huge random sound collage with a tiny skinny puppy sample at the end sparked my interest in them. this is really quite a long and pointless email which i'm writing because i cant sleep, but hey, it may relate to some people. just wondering, does anyone have a creative audigy platinum ex sound card and trying to run it with windows xp, because mine is giving me hell, i want to use all the stuff i've go to make music, but the system jsut wont cooperate enough, i'm off --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
