Sadly, no. IDM is a genre, whereas Intelligent Drum & Bass is just pretentious. derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, no one uses the term intelligent dnb anymore for obvious reasons... Atmospheric dnb seems to be the consensus. For those of you dissing the bird calls and dolphin sounds: as strange as it may seem, I think the atmo scene is more innovative right now than the 'other' scenes in dnb. Good Looking is loosing it's grip of the dominant market share and there are some interesting artists/labels springing up to pick up the slack and move things along... 720 is back! italic. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I remember sometime in the early/mid-nineties, John Peel mentioned that Andy Kershaw had asked him what the difference between D&B and jungle was, and Peel said that he hadn't a clue. Then he went onto say that there was now such a thing and 'intelligent' D&B which he just didn't get at all. As far as he was concerened the more stupid the music the better. I'm not sure what my point was there, but there you go anyway............... g. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This has been explained many times before. IDM are the Warp bands from the Artificial Intelligence series inspired by Detroit techno. "Intelligent" d&b was named by DJ Phantasy to describe the instrumental jungle-dub tracks in 1993/94 that didn't have ravey raga raps over them. cheers CT Richard wrote:

Hence the old John Peel comment that the best thing about intelligent drum & bass is that it implies the existence of stupid drum & bass, which would be fantastic. (Chacking new mail, I think this is what Glenn meant... ) nb, yes, describing the sort of music you make / listen to as 'intelligent whatever' is insufferably pretentious. I'm sure noone on the IDM list would do such a thing. :-) d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Doesn't John Peel call his wife "The Pig" or something equally ignorant. He may play good music but he's hardly underground anymore. Both idm and d&b were reacting against the same thing - rave culture - which they both had roots in. Learn your history kiddies...

He does call her The Pig, but it's an affectionate term. If she was bothered I think she would have given him a swift kicking many years ago. As for him being or not being 'underground', it doesn't matter one bit. -- Dan Brusca www.vfrecordings.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hey don't knock Peel. One of the refreshing things about him is that he's always been completely out of fashion with either what's happening in the mainstream or the so called 'underground' (which is really just another form of mainstream for the kids that never fitted in at school, like me for example!) . He plays what he likes which is what a DJ should do IMHO, and I bet most of the stuff that he does play won't have been heard by many listeners before, including people on the very cutting edge of music like we are all on this list ;-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
